I'm in the prosses of building a disc sander for my lathe here are some pics, attachment=6498:P1000559.JPG] post-2926-0-70249500-1344624362_thumb.jp

The disc sander is a four piece unit the first piece slides tight to the power head of my lathe

The second piece is the sander itself mounted to it's own face platepost-2926-0-20764100-1344624024_thumb.jppost-2926-0-40145100-1344624047_thumb.jp

the third pieces slides up tight to the first piece and the large plywood washer/wing nut holds the whole unit to the bed of the lathepost-2926-0-67523800-1344624162_thumb.jppost-2926-0-92207600-1344624194_thumb.jppost-2926-0-56709700-1344624226_thumb.jppost-2926-0-57602300-1344624239_thumb.jp

it's still a work in process the table will be a single layer of MDF with a miter slot possably formica for the final top finish, the dust shroud was made doing bent lamination and slide into the slot of the first piecepost-2926-0-16940300-1344624078_thumb.jppost-2926-0-04789900-1344624117_thumb.jp

Sorry I didn't talk about dust collection post-2926-0-19670300-1344627224_thumb.jppost-2926-0-19670300-1344627224_thumb.jppost-2926-0-91982800-1344627194_thumb.jp the chamber you see next to the sanding disc, once the top is mounted it will be air tight. I've put a temparary plywood top on, and hooked my dust collector up it really sucked the temp top down to the base, I've sanded some test pieces, and the dust collection works great.

You sir are a genius. I have a lathe that sits idle for the majority of a the year and I've been thinking about buying a large floor stand disc sander. Why not combine them??? I think I'm going to be taking your genius and applying it in the shop with my own home made version.

Thank you for the inspiration.

i have been wanting to make a sander that is on a long drum that i can stretch from the head to the tail and then use it to sand projects down on it. then i can wrap different grits from one end to the other so i can sand a project at 60 grit all the way up to 600

basicly just without the dust collection and the table i dont realy want to use it as a sander for flat stock flatening but rather a sander to use on by turnings. so if i need to shape a peice of wood i can. just screw it onto the lathe brace it up turn it on and sand.
