Howtoworkwood
Hello everyone, I am planning on building myself a brand new workbench and was wondering, besides the common vice (vise) what do people consider the most useful bench accessory? Bench dogs? Bench hooks? Sliding deadman? End vice? Tool well? Other?
Mister Pants
Personally for what I do bench dogs and end vice. I really want a sliding deadman for my next bench though. Tool wells as far as I'm concerned are pretty useless and only exist to enhance clutter.
RenaissanceWW
I would say in order: 1. Dog Holes and Dogs 2. Holdfasts 3. Bench hook So the good news is that the cheapest things and the things that don't require any installation (other than drilling holes). These are so dirt simple that they can be adapted in so many ways to fit whatever you are working on at the moment.
CessnaPilotBarry
My favorite is my pop-up planing stop. I use it all the time! All there is to it is a board with two slots, hanger bolts screwed into the end of the bench, and wing nuts and washers on the bolts... Loosen the nuts, raise the stop, plane... and it's gone when you don't want it. It works great for biscuit cutting, carcase assembly and other stuff, too! Trip
the BC tail vise get more use then all other holds. I mounted an electric box on each end for routers -- it gets more use then anything.
Onboard
Just an FYI Vice: "An immoral or evil habit or behavior." Vise: "Any of various devices, usually having two jaws that may be brought together or separated by means of a screw, lever, or the like, used to hold an object firmly while work is being done on it." Howtoworkwood
Thanks for the great ideas guys, it looks like I'm gonna go with a set of dog holes first then. Also that pop up plane stop sounds like a good idea . Any tips on which kind of dogs to use? I'm planning on just using dowels!
sbarton22
Um, the ol' "church key" is still the #1 accessory for my bench.
Cochese
Some Gramercy holdfasts for me, followed by a bench hook. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using Tapatalk
Howtoworkwood
Whats the "ol' church key'?
nateswoodworks
For me it would be planing stop (mine is the T style where you lock it in the front vise and right in front of a bench dog), bench dogs and shooting board.
Dave H
Whats the "ol' church key'? It's a bottle opener, it sounds like he hoists a few brews at the bench. I believe that would be a bench vice, not to be confused with a bench vise
bgrella
Other than an end vise my favorite and most use bench accessory are my Bernoulli Spiral Clamps. Easy to make in any size and never fail. You'll likely never use a 'planing stop' ever again.
rodger.
Lots of good ideas here! Dog holes and dogs are a must, along with a good vise. Also, I really like Shannon's flip out tray that is installed underneath the bench to hold parrafin wax and rags.
Rapid Roger
At least one shelf under the top to hold sanders, sand paper, glue, fasteners, drills, and any other item that is used alot but gets in the way while working at the bench. walnut_weasel
How about a second bench? My main bench always seems to be cluttered!
sbarton22
My dad always had a paint can opener tied to a string and attached to every bench. He stored all of his screws in quart sized paint cans, so he needed them all of the time. I asked him one time what it was called, and he told me a "church key"...because it opens all that is good and true in this world. Now I understand he meant beer. Rapid Roger
Not a bench accessory but a good reason for having a good strong bench............It gives you a place to bang your head against when you cut the board off twice and it is still too short. Does that give you an idea on how my day went? Rog
Howtoworkwood
Haha, I like the stool idea! Better make it a real fancy one though . Shelf's a good idea too. Any more for any more... this is going to be the most 'accesoried out' bench ever at this rate. Maybe somewhere to store timber... like a small drying rack in the middle... good idea, bad idea? JMort847
Holdfasts, planing stop and bench hook are the top three for me, followed by dogs and sliding deadman.
