    Pine!!!

I'm not a big fan of pine, but unfortunately I have to make a mantle-piece out of it. My big question is how I should finish it. I don't do a lot of woodwork but a few years ago I made a piece of furniture out of oak and did the whole wire wool, briwax, wire wool, briwax, wire wool, briwax...process and it came up so nice and shiny. I want to do the same to my piece of pine, but because it is a soft wood will it have the same effect? I hate the look and feel of varnish, so I would prefer not to use varnish, but it does need something to protect it from the scratches. Thanks.
  3. Yeah, they look good. I saw something like that before but I could not remember the name. Thanks guys. Another problem now, I can't find them in black iron to match the rest of the furniture on the box.
  4. 16" by 30" The wood is an inch thick.
  5. Hi, I have made a solid oak sea chest with a heavy arched lid. As you can imagine the hinges will need to be quite powerful to hold it. What type of hinge would be the best for the job? Is there a hinge I can get that will only turn 90 degrees so that I don't have to install a lid stay? Thanks, Benbo!
  6. Ok, thanks. they aren't big enough for a bench so I should be all right. I will probably make one of them toy models things for some kids I know. Thanks again.
  7. I have a few branches cut off my cherry tree. They are not very thick, I would only get small pieces probably not even worthy to be called planks. Nevertheless, I would like to use it for small projects, models and the like. I have nowhere to store the branches to keep them dry. Can I cut out the planks and season them after they are cut or do they need to be dry first? Thanks.
  8. i am having a slight problem with planing my panels, as they move about as I plane them. They are too wide to fit in a vice, so how do I fasten them? Thanks.
  9. Is this what I should be going for? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DIAMOND-SHARPENING-STONE-EXTRA-FINE-FINE-COARSE-WHETSTONE-PLANE-ROUTER-CHISEL-/281146185856?pt=UK_Hand_Tools_Equipment&clk_rvr_id=507269296338 Thanks.
  10. Ok guys, thanks for the help. I am sure I will love it once I get going.
  11. Just a thought. I am just starting woodworking and I wish I had someone to teach me. Maybe you could take someone on and teach them all you know and pass on the torch.
  12. Yip that's it. Thanks for the info. I don' t have a stone. Can it be sharpened by a file or do I need to buy a stone or grinder?
  13. I just got my first hand plane. It is old and rusty, and I think the blade is blunt because when I use it the wood just clogs up the blade. Can these blades be sharpened or do I just buy a new one. It is a irwin record plane. Are they any good?
