  1. I'm waiting on my new honing guide and granite before I seriously lap the soles and sharpen the irons. This is addicting.

    No. 5 New Paint Top

Thank you. Model paint from Hobby Lobby and a hair dryer. I'm curious to see how it holds up.
  3. From watching some videos, it's recommended you do not use too much pressure while your lapping the sole of your plane. Just use enough like you were actually using it. I guess it can warp some if you use too much pressure. It's suggested you also only do it when it's fully assembled. I can't find the article, but here's a link to the PDF that I read as well. Hand Plane Rehab by Joe Hurst-Wajszczuk
  4. I'm sure you're getting tired of seeing these, but here they are with fresh paint. I'm going to paint the frogs as well so they're stripping right now. I'll spare everybody anymore photos till the I'm done.
  5. Oh, and I just sanded the tote and knob with 100 and 220 and then used some Minwax mahogany stain and sealer. I did a couple of coats. I'm not sure I like the varnish so figure some wax will be fine. I like the dull look over the shiney.
  6. I got them both cleaned up pretty good. I need to stop by the local granite dealer to get a scrap piece so I can lap the sole. I took most of the rust off with a piece of MDF with some 100,220 glued down. I do not want to use my table saw top. I also need to really polish the lever cap and such. I do not have a bench grinder but I do have a Dremel. What polish compound should I use? I have Brasso, will that work with the non-brass parts? I think I also need to remove the japaning. There are rust spots coming through on both planes. I have someone that can sandblast it for me, but is there another way to remove it?
  7. Oh, and I think the No. 4 is a Type 20 (1962-67) and the No. 5 is a Type 17 (1942-45).
  8. I'll probably use a jig. Here's some before/after shots of just some WD-40 and Scotch-Brite.
  9. Since neither seems to be in bad shape I'm just going to throw some steel wool and WD-40 at them to to take care of the rust. The smaller parts I'll hit with some WD-40 and a toothbrush. The sole is going to get some 120-220 work and I'm going to pick up some wet/dry for the iron. I'm referencing Paul Sellers.
  10. I can't take credit for a beat down. She offered them both to me for $20/ea. I didn't balk of course. I just took them apart to check the guts. With some TLC they'll make good shavings. Now I just need to learn how to use 'em . . .
  11. I picked up a couple of Stanley planes and the flea market today. No. 4 & No. 5, $20/ea. The No. 4 has a chipped frog. Is it worth trying to repair or will it make a difference? It's just on the leading edge and not on the part that makes contact with the top of the sole. The contact points look good and there's no rocking.

  14. While cleaning up some dust I accidently fed the table insert to the dust collector. It has a very effecient impeller . . . I ended up just using some MDF and sanding till it was a snug fit and flush.
