  1. first off, thank you to all who've replied... this was driving me nuts. OK to sum up, I have cauls, but I generally use them on the 'flat' side of the board... anyone got a picture of a caul used on the 'edge' of the board? I'm not 'getting' that image. that board is about 12" square (just about as big as will fit through my lunchbox planer)... I used 4 24" irwin parallel jaw clamps and several generic 'f-clamps'.
  2. Hi gang, I was chatting in the forums late/early last night and we were discussing a couple of cutting boards I glued up recently: As you can see I have a bit of a problem with this glue up... glued up the same session... similar results wide view of the first board. Honestly it was awhile back that I glued these up, but I do recall that I alternated clamps top and bottom of the assembly (noted as the bar of the parallel jaw clamps (Irwin 24"ers)) the boards were assembled using Marc's classic process... boards glued edge to edge, planed to thickness and then flipped up on end to get the end grain board. Do I have a clamping problem or a planer problem? Ned
  3. My condolences to your entire family & community. Prayers for all involved.
  4. First and foremost, welcome to the community! As for the floor, your mileage may vary, but it sounds like this is a 'stepping stone' shop... ie, you're going to put up something else 'soon'. Given that, I'd just fill those gaps with sawdust while you're in this shop and be done with it.
  5. I did indeed have a hobby site. Friends of mine ran a local ISP & I was an early enthusiast. It was late eighties I'll admit though. Ned
  6. I wouldn't hesitate to put them in the same room together, but like Steve, I tend towards hawaiian shirts in all seasons. Seriously, build what speaks to you, don't fret about styles matching, eclectic can be good too!
  7. I just had a bit of a surreal moment... I'm over on google+ on the artisanboards side (separate from my regular page) and I notice the 'suggested friends tab'... in there is a suggestion for Christopher Schwartz because my other account has him in a circle... Just how cool is that? so I add him... and am clicking add on several other woodworking friends of mine and I notice Bob Lang pop up thanks to Tom Iovino... ok, this is getting wierd... holy kevin freaking bacon 6° of separation.
  8. I'd go with a cheap battery powered speaker pod. My wife's ford escape has a typical stock stereo, is old enough that there isn't an input. I use her truck for my courier job from time to time, and found that a battery powered speaker pod worked well enough. As nice and polished as Woodtalk is, let's face it, you're listening to a conversation, not (much) Music. Do you need to put it through the stereo? Ned
  9. MIke, thanks for the link, I'm focusing on content right now... mostly my own musings at the moment, but I'll get that round tuit eventually and put a list of blogs and forums up when I have a chance!
  10. Thanks C (can I call you C?) I'm not sure about how much work it is, I have loads of time to think at work, so I am simply putting fingers to keyboard when I get home, or the next day when I have a few minutes. I expect it will be somewhat fluid until I fully hit my stride, so bear with me. All the best!
  11. Hi folks! I'm a newbie here on the woodtalk forums, but I've been online in one way or another all the way back to the bad old days of dial-up modems. I had a website way back in the '80's (wonder what ever happened to that...). Lately I've been catching up on old episodes of the Woodtalk podcasts while I'm working, and the guys have inspired me to give something back to the community. I've started up my own corner of the web at: Artisanboards.blogspot.com, I'm also on twitter @Artisanboards. If you're so inclined, swing by and take a look at my woodworking journey. Thanks for looking!
  12. K, Build what you want, but I'd be wary about removing that factory finish from the oak flooring, that stuff is going to murder your planer knives. Other than that, build away!
  13. I just recieved 4 different emails from popular woodworking in the space of 20 minutes. One spamming me to subscribe (I do, but am seriously considering canceling), one spamming about the woodright shop season 27 on dvd (I'm no Galoot, and 'Saint Roy' makes my teeth itch)... One spamming their latest book sale (nice prices, but can you tell I'm annoyed at the moment?) and one with actual content in it about spoon carving... Sheesh. One click unsubscribe here I come...
