  1. Hi All, I've been woodworking for a few years and decided to purchase a 14'' Rikon bandsaw this summer. Most of the projects I've been working on did not require bandsaw work, so it mostly sat with the exception of a few minor cuts here and there. Anyway, I got a request to saw a small log in half for an arts and crafts type project. No problem I figured, I'd throw it up on the bandsaw and be done with it. I certainly didn't want to mess with a round object on my table saw. This was a pretty small piece; about 6'' diameter by 8'' length. About half way through the cut, the blade twisted sideways and got bound up, cut the plastic table insert and lower blade guide, and bent the blade. I dissected the wood piece and verified that there wasn't any metal or foreign objects in it. My question is, was what happened due to my lack of experience using the equipment and, if so, what should I do in the future to perform this cut in a better / safer way. Alternatively, is it possible that I did not set the saw up correctly and that's my issue. I followed the steps to adjust the bearings but it's possible I missed something.
  2. I forgot about that Willie... Good point. They are only open till 5pm during the week as well which can make it difficult. Typically, they prefer you call ahead to make an order and selecting your materials is usually discouraged or not allowed. The plus side is you get the same price as those who buy in bulk which is usually half of what I pay at other stores. Your order is shrink wrapped and delivered via forklift to your car / truck. Can't beat that.
  3. That looks awesome. I like the wood graveyard in the background that it took to create that chair. I'm looking to do one over the winter. Did you have any plans going in?
  4. I know this is a somewhat old thread, but I live in Des Moines and recommend you check out Liberty Hardwoods in Ankeny. Their prices and selection are very good.
