Hi All,
I've been woodworking for a few years and decided to purchase a 14'' Rikon bandsaw this summer. Most of the projects I've been working on did not require bandsaw work, so it mostly sat with the exception of a few minor cuts here and there. Anyway, I got a request to saw a small log in half for an arts and crafts type project. No problem I figured, I'd throw it up on the bandsaw and be done with it. I certainly didn't want to mess with a round object on my table saw. This was a pretty small piece; about 6'' diameter by 8'' length. About half way through the cut, the blade twisted sideways and got bound up, cut the plastic table insert and lower blade guide, and bent the blade. I dissected the wood piece and verified that there wasn't any metal or foreign objects in it.
My question is, was what happened due to my lack of experience using the equipment and, if so, what should I do in the future to perform this cut in a better / safer way. Alternatively, is it possible that I did not set the saw up correctly and that's my issue. I followed the steps to adjust the bearings but it's possible I missed something.
