Novice. My "workshop" also serves as a kitchen. I have made a couple items (desk, workbench, box, etc.) and refinished a couple doors.

  1. Welcome to my world!! I am sure that I over analyze everything and am paranoid about making a mistake..."what if....." When I finally DO get started I work really slow as it's so stressful for - but oh so rewarding! I'm getting better and am giving myself more slack. Reading/Listening to the people around here and other places is encouraging - but I make the mistake of comparing myself to them...many of whom already have lots of experience. Not just in woodworking but working with their hands. I am way too hard on myself. Does this sound at all familiar?
  2. I'm so happy someone else noticed this besides me. I was working on a project this summer and I never damaged so many screws. I ended up buying an extractor kit! I wasn't doing anything different than on other projects so had to figure it was the screws. I hate to think that one day I'll have to order fasteners online. I work at the Big Orange Box and it seems ridiculous to have to work like this. (working at BOB as well as buying fasteners online)
  3. Is there a way on this forum to contact other members privately? I'd rather not post my e-mail.
  4. Unbelievable! I have not known ANYONE who could use this...and now I'm getting all these replies?! Who wood have believed?
  5. I'm in Brooklyn, NY. I'll need time to get a box, etc.
  6. I have a NEW, UNUSED, table saw dust collection device http://www.amazon.com/PSI-Woodworking-TSGUARD-Table-Collection/dp/B0006FKJ0U/ref=sr_1_6?s=hi&ie=UTF8&qid=1411039624&sr=1-6&keywords=dust+collector which I will GIVE AWAY to have it removed from my shop. I just ask to be paid for shipping. Suffice it to say, my shop alternates as a kitchen and this item is HUGE. Most shops may need to cut the "tubes" and will need a firm (cement?) flooring to set up. I am a novice and had an "accident" and rushed to get a cover - but didn't open the package until it was too late to return. I was SURE it would work for me - from the packaging, I never dreamed it could be so big. BTW, I have a Bosch 2007 TS - this set up looks like it would even fit a full table saw. If I had a trade school or something that could use it, I would donate it - but I don't. FYI, I bought my saw used and it did not have a blade cover. IT DOES NOW - and never let the more experienced people talk you into "not need it as it gets in their waiy". Enough said. Just let me know. I have no idea what shipping will be - it's heavy. But I would LOVE to get it out of my kitchen.
  7. I live in Brooklyn, and would love to go. I don't have a car though and a lot of these things are off the beaten track. I can take a train, but would need a ride to the event - unless it's in walking distance of the train station. (I'm thinking that the NJ Transit must have trains from NYC to Trenton). I'm a novice woodworker and like watching how some of the handtools are used. I have a few old ones myself (sitting on display!).
  8. I am SOOOO jealous! I would give anything to just visit Rocklers. Probably a good thing I can't though. I'm good at convincing myself that I really "need" that tool and will be sure to use it. (lies, lies, more lies)
  9. Hi. This is my first post. I'm also a novice woodworker. I started when finding wood on the street (old bookcase, futon). Somehow, I ended up with a cabinet/entertainment center. Not fancy, but it works!!! I always keep my eyes open for toss outs and a friend just suggested I check out Goodwill and Salvation Army for some old items that could be refinished or transformed into something else. Start slow....spread the fun out by just getting the tools for your current job and gradually expand. It's always fun to go shopping! I've also invested in a subscription to ShopNotes which pays for itself! It's chockfull of great tips and ideas - with very clear drawings. You are NOT alone! It's great to know that not everyone here has been at woodworking for years! Nice to have some company.
