  1. That can be found at Home Depot/Lowe’s? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  2. On top of the two existing coats of poly? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  3. I’m working on finishing a pair of bookcases I built for my wife. Using rattle can poly to seal it in. I have sprayed 2 moderate coats on the cases and shelves. Just sanded the first case down with a fine sanding sponge. Does a third and final coat need to be applied for the finish o be done correctly? Or will two coats be fine? I ask because overspray is an issue with my current set up (in the laundry room with a shop vac and a window as my only source of venting). So I’m almost positive that if I spray another coat, it’s going to be rough again. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  4. Is it potentially dangerous to lacquer a cutting board that will be used? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  5. I work in a cabinet shop, and we’re doing a job for a customer and we are putting a maple pull-out cutting board into a knotty Pine kitchen cabinet. I asked my boss how it will be finished, seeing as how the cabinets are getting sealed and lacquered. He said probably lacquer, which baffles me. Aren’t cutting boards supposed to be finished in an oil product, not lacquer??? I always assumed the chemicals in the lacquer would contaminate any food products that gets cut on it. Am I correct, or misinformed? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  6. I don't really know if oils give a polished or dull look, and I've done the flags in a more distressed look with no stain but I'll burn the stripes to darken them and lightly burn the stars to give an in-between shade of color from the stripes, and I've stained the stripes with red oak and I have a thick blue stain for the stars, and I've also just used California Redwood for the stripes. So I guess the design of the flag varies on what the finish would be. Recommendation? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  7. So I've made a few projects here and there, but I've always used rattle can polyurethane for finishing. My new project is to make an Army NCO sword display for the sword I was just gifted recently. I'm wanting to put an American flag in the back and put my company logo in the front and have foam in between to hold the sword. I am, however interested in not doing a rattle van poly for this. I'm thinking of doing an oil finish over it all? There will be laser engraving for the stars of the flag and the company logo and engineer motto. Basically this... Will be placed onto and cut out of this... This is a basic sword display, but for the back layer like I said would be a flag and then the top would be the picture above. Does oil sound like a good finish for this kind of product? Thanks for any responses and advice in advance Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  8. I agree with wdwerker. I use those clips to hang anything. I've hung a shadow box made from Purple Heart, and that was about 40 lbs with all the stuff inside. I use them for wooden flags I make. Comes in different lengths depending on how big your frame is. And holds a lot of weight, so long as you put the screws in the studs of the wall. However, the frame won't sit plumb on the front. You can measure how much it sticks off the wall at the top, and make a block to fit down on the bottom to keep it plumb. And put trim around the frame to hide the gap. Just an idea for you Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  9. I was hoping for a wipe on or brush on oil or wax or something before I would have to resort to something so extreme Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  10. My mother is getting her kitchen walls painted after 20 years of living there. She was doing a deep cleaning spree on the kitchen and she bleached her stained cabinets. They went from having a high gloss shine to a dull satin shine now. Aside from 20 rattle cans of poly, what can be done to get the shine back. Note, she nor I have a spray system to spray anything with ease Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  11. Good call. I tightened the nut and it didn't lock up. Still burned a bit, but I believe that's due to a dull blade.
  12. I have a craftsman circular saw that I've been using for almost all of my cutting so far. It was a gift from my parents. But they don't know a whole awful lot about the nice brands, but it's all I got for now. Once I make a few things and sell them and get more cash, I'll slowly start acquiring better quality tools. Mostly it's been to cut pallet wood to length. Here lately, it hasn't been wanting to cut through the wood, which is only about 1/2" pine. I'll get partway through my cut and the blade just stops spinning, but the saw is still running. And it's been causing burn to the cut as well. Any ideas what the issue may be? 13. Made this for my wedding last year. The small stars are pine and the larger dark ones are (if I remember correctly) walnut. Just used fine tip sharpies from Walmart, and when they were all signed, sprayed with a rattle can of poly. The ink went into the wood great with pine. No bleeding around the letters. The spray sealed the ink in so it won't smear. That option worked great in my experience. Hope that helps Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
  14. You referring to something like this?
  15. This is a little off topic, but what software do you have that you're using to get these sketches? I'd really like to do a glue-up, since I haven't done a flag yet without having a backer and the flags I've seen sold online look really nicely made to not have any back to them, but I'm willing to listen to another suggestion seeing as how I am very young in my woodworking hobby/career. But I do like your ideas. If I did another with a backer board attached, would I just dado into the plywood/MDF and add that shelf into it with the coins or would the actual wood be more fitting to hold the shelf in it like the one in my sketch?
