  1. It is still wood and as such it will continue to absorb/ dissipate moisture and thus move. Modern houses pose a reduced risk as the humidity in the air is less prone to change over the season. However, in my apparent (brick house, 120 years old, no AC) there is still quite a change in humidity. If anything: a clear is always good, safe practice
  2. I knew I'd forgotten sth. Will add a plate on the inside next time I'm there.
  3. Due to privacy reasons I cannot post any pictures of the proud new owner of the toy chest. However, I must say that I was completely taken by surprise. The chest was made for a two year old and given that she just turned two and it is her first Christmas she actively participated in I did not expect her to recognize the box. Upon realizing this I gave the box in parts to her parents (it's after all their living room that benefits from a bit of order and a place to store toys) and got a hand-made teddy bear from a friend in Bulgaria. The bear - Molly - is lovely and great but the star of the evening was the chest. Especially after I got out the chalk... later on she had climbed into the box and her father had to get a her cushion and blanket because she wanted to sleep but near us and not in her room. I went home last night with that warm and fuzzy Christmas feeling (the Bordeaux helped too...) and felt quite good this morning (despite the Bordeaux). But I was blown away after being sent pictures of the little one this morning, who had - again - climbed into the chest, refusing to get out. I believe it is safe to say, that the piece was readily adopted by her and I hope it will stay with her for time to come. Mission accomplished. I'd like to thank all of you for encouraging words and the great little community that is WTO. Happy holidays.
  4. Not quite sure whether I understand your question. The bamboo stuff is basically a sheet good sold in various widths (8", 16", ...) and lengths (up to 7 feet). The hardware stores in my area do not stock a lot of different woods. You get treated and non-treated construction stuff (fir or spruce), various sheetgoods (though you hardly find a full 4x8 sheet, instead they have a saw station where they will cut you the pieces that you need and charge by the square meter (a much higher rate compared to a big sheet by the sqm). Beside all the particle board stuff (kitchen countertops...) they also have sheets made from thin laminated strips of wood (beech, birch, oak, sprice, pine, ...). The bamboo stuff is stored together with these.
  5. Oups - I'd hopped the first too pictures would do the trick. They are little plates to serve breakfast. Hard or soft boiled egg goes into the recess, the plate can be used as a regular plate in which case I'd recommend 9-10" square) or as a serving "tray" (think bread roll/ slice of bread with cheese or ham). Either way allows you to get rid of the egg cups one would use otherwise. (The recess is a through hole and can also be used to hold them (insert a finger). Then they make lovely little plates for finger food.)
  6. One of the gifts I had planed for this year did not work out. I learned about that yesterday evening and had to come up with something else. I batched out six of these in about 60' and applied two coats of oil (with some additive so that it hardens) last night. Hope their are ready tomorrow afternoon (we celebrate on christmas eve). They are made from bamboo boards (man-made, bought in a big box store) They are about 8" square, the hole is 35mm (~1.4"), 3/4" thickness, back bevel is 30° to the vertical (see picture four for a little jigs - please keep your fingers safe when doing such a thing).
  7. Not my girl;) - my half sister's daughter and my goddaughter The dowels are located in such a way that the lid can't slide away. They effectively index in the inside corners of the box. The lid is just placed on the box and can't slide off.
  8. It's done - just in time. (Damn iPhone camera - ever since the battery was changed the lens has dirt on it...) (exchanged pics 1 and 2) I did not mount the hinges for safety reasons (the little girl is 2 years old). Instead I mortised for the hinges and installed placeholders made from aluminium. All intentional;)... 4 dowels are screwed into the lid to ensure the positioning. It has imperfections and demonstrated my lack of experience - oh well, learning is fun to some extent;). Thanks to all of you for the support. Season's Greetings to all of you.
  9. Have a look the YouTube videos by Peter Parfitt. He's a huge fan of the stuff. I recently used it for the first time - it's rather easy to apply.
  10. First coat of finish is on (Osmo). Does anyone spot the ....***** Does explain why I had trouble assembling that thing... Had to do a lot of rework because joints weren't flush. There's a gap it two too:(
  11. Floating tenons did the trick so far - thanks for the unit conversion:)
  12. On a side note: I've built an outside dinning table inspired by Marc's build this year. My shop is in a rather humid basement and I built it from air dried Doug fir that was stored outside. The table top has breadboard end law that were cut to fit flush in the basement. I took the table into my flat for finishing (oil). After 7 days the breadboard ends were 3mm proud on both sides. It's been standing outside ever since and we get a lot of rain at this time of the year - the table top is currently 8mm proud per side (that's 16mm to a 850mm tabletop).
  13. It's in the clamps... Time bro work out the lid construction (ie hinges or not)

    mft3

I don't own an MFT3 (yet) so my view on it is based an showcase ones, reviews and videos. The MFT is certainly a work bench will excellent abilities for work holding. However, I believe that much of its potential lies in the combination with the track saw system Festool offers allowing it to easily and accurately cut panels )and other stuff square and to size.
  15. My modest selection -4 800mm and 4 1250mm parallel clamps + 4 long pipe clamps (2m) Works most of the time;)
