I'm happy using (and paying for) Sketchup Pro, but I'm getting fed up with Microsoft Windows. The last time I tried switching to Linux, I gave up because there was no (acceptable) way to run Sketchup. My research says that Sketchup won't run on Linux: not in Wine, not in a virtual machine.

I spent 3 years as a unix/Linux sysadmin, so I'd have no trouble using Linux. I just need something that will run the apps I use.

Does anyone have experience using FreeCad for woodworking design? Any advice for woodworking design software that runs on Linux?

I realize that asking about Linux on WTO is a long shot, but I figure it's worth a shot.

Hey everyone. Probably a softball question here, but I'm designing some new bathroom furniture and we're loving lots of curves in the design. While I have everything roughly how I like it now, I'm faced with the quandary of how I actually create these curves in the wood! I have a drawing bow, but it's a fiddly way to do things and I'm wondering if there's something simpler and more exact that I'm missing. I know how I'm creating the detail on the bottom of the face frame -- it's a 3 point curve from 3.5 inches down then up to the center point, but given that the width varies between these two pieces, I know the curve is different. I honestly have no idea how I got the curves in the doors -- just eyeballed I guess (the yellow is where I'll inset some caning and the bottom opening on the tower is for hiding a cat litter box). Pictures attached.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Reading through the post: Sketchup 2018, it's good to see that Sketchup Make 2017 is still available. But it also seems that there are a lot of alternative design programs.

For those who don't have a huge investment in Sketchup maybe it's time to consider a succesor or at least an alternative. What would that be?

Also I'm planning on using cherry as a main wood. Maybe walnut or Sapele for an accent. What are your thoughts?

Tried SketchUp to work out some ideas for a couple of projects I had in mind. It was great, but I have absolutely fallen in love with Fusion 360. Bit of a learning curve for sure, but I'm having a blast with it. Currently doing the rough cuts on a hobby shelf I designed for my desk (for painting miniatures and terrain making for rpg's and wargaming). 36" x 48" x 9". Part bookshelf for my primary gaming books, 3=tiered paint rack and other shelving/nooks for materials as well as a 24x18 pegboard to hang my hobby tools.

Most of it will be joined using stop dados and grooves, but still undecided about how to join a couple of sections.

Just as a side note, embarrassing but funny... I was rough dimensioning the white oak boards with hand rip and crosscut saws. As I was working on the next to last rip cuts (3ft rips, mind you), it occurred to me, I had a circular saw 30 feet away in the shed the whole time lol!
(no table saw, and working outdoors cuz no power in the shed)

I heard about this new (to me) CAD program. The 30 min video is worth the watch if you're interested in CAD.

The program looks like it would be easier to learn than Fusion 360. It is not parametric, but somewhere between SketchUp and F.360. I'm told, but can't confirm, that it will draw true circles.

The free version is pretty limited, so if you like it you're looking at $300/year.

I am working in Sketchup and trying without success to draw a twisted block. What I am talking about is a 6 x 6 x 4 block where the top 6 x 6 face is rotated 45 degrees with respect to the bottom face and each top corner is still connected by a line to the appropriate bottom corner. @Ronn W I am trying for a shorter version of what you drew for your Twisted Leg Table project. Was this in Sketchup?

I can twist the top relative to the bottom face, but no matter what I've tried I can't create a curving side that appears smooth. I am trying to depict a turning blank that I will use for a project and I want to try out different proportions and different degrees of rotation. I could try another design program, but I am reluctant to have to put things on hold while I climb another learning curve.

I was looking through the Guild and I was looking over 'Intro to Sketchup' and started developing some questions I couldn't find answers to. Has anyone input dimensioned drawings from any one of those period furniture books like 'Making Furniture Masterpieces: 30 projects with measured drawings' by Franklin Gotshall into Sketchup? Also, if one goes the route of using Sketchup does it negate the practice of creating full size drawings and using them to transfer measurements to whatever you're building.

The Sketchup version taught in the Guild is the web-based version, 'Sketchup Free'. Does anyone see a problem using the latest desktop version (2017), called 'Sketchup Make'?

I have the free version of SketchUp 2016 loaded on an old laptop, which I am replacing with a newer machine. I don't want to use a later version of SketchUp as I have a good set of instructions (from Bob Lang) for this version. Has anyone ever transfered SketchUp before?

I can tell you what I've done that hasn't worked. I copied the entire SketchUp folder onto a flash from the old HD using Windows Explorer. Then I copied the folder from the flash to the new desktop. When I run SketchUp.exe on the new computer it shows the welcome pade, but asks for license information.

SU still runs on the old comuter, which on start up does not ask for license info, and I don't see any such info in any obvious place. Any thoughts?

Probably the most frustrating thing is that single objects are not automatically grouped but sit there as parts collections.

What I'm running into is when things connect to other things at edges then re-selection becomes difficult if not impossible.

Is there a way to make a new item automatically its own group?

Of course making a group item is not hard, but I would like it to be automatic.

I can't figure out how to include a wedge-shaped (short sides with different length) mortice in a stretcher.

Actually I have found a way, but it means the stretcher ends up being composed of two pieces. I can draw a shape within a stretcher, but cannot then push to create a mortice.

Anyone knows how to do that?

Is there any way to make either a French curve or a compound curve in Sketchup?

Once you have a curve created is there any way to edit the curvature? Or length?
