	<span lang="en" style="background:#FFFFFF;color:rgb(51,51,51);font-family:Verdana, 'sans-serif';font-size:10.5pt;" xml:lang="en">The back story -<br>
	<br>
	A couple of weeks ago our church bought a new camera system for our live Facebook feed and it includes a control panel system for live streaming and 3 new cameras. The cameras mount on rigid steel brackets and two were mounted on columns on the side walls with one on the back wall above the media booth. So the first Sunday morning when these were set up and ready our associate pastor had the pulpit so our pastor could babysit his new 'toy'.<br>
	<br>
	After the first service with choir and piano/organ I asked our pastor how the cameras worked and he was pretty pleased. Then, we had the second service... the one where we have the live band and far more lively music (I play acoustic guitar in the band). Music like bass guitar that can rattle the ceiling tiles. So I asked the pastor how he liked the second service and he was dejected because the two cameras mounted on the side wall columns were vibrating too much to even switch to them. We like our music loud, I guess!!<br>
	<br>
	They added screws into the column mounts, locked everything down, added screws to the cameras, and nothing worked. I told them we need isolation mounts but nobody knew what I was talking about so I didn't push it. I recognized that the problem wasn't the mounts, rather the problem was that the sheetrock around the columns was vibrating and resonating with the music. That meant no matter how hard you locked the cameras and their mounts down they're still going to vibrate. So Monday morning I sent Bro Terry a link to some isolation mounts and asked if he wanted me to make some to which he quickly replied, "Yessssssssssssssssssss!!!" The ones in the link I sent were $500 each, btw.<br>
	<br>
	This will take two posts to get the photos in but basically I drew this in Fusion 360 and cut them out of Baltic Birch since I have tons on hand as cutoffs from all the Longworth chucks I've cut.<br>

	Here is my latest piece.  I've made several "sculptural" bowls in the past, but this is a true sculpture.
</p>

<p>
	This was my submission to the American Association of Woodturners POP  exhibition and auction.  The theme for this year's POP is "holding space".  Alas, my piece was not selected by the jury for inclusion in the exhibition/auction <img alt=":(" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/default_sad.png" srcset="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/sad@2x.png 2x" title=":(" width="20" /><img alt=":(" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/default_sad.png" srcset="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/sad@2x.png 2x" title=":(" width="20" />.
</p>

<p>
	Each submission needs an artist's statement tieing the work to the show's theme.  Here is mine:
</p>

<p>
	In ray streaked light of early morn,<br />
	The new one, the little one is born.<br />
	The Guardians gather, holding space.<br />
	Hands encircle the protected place.<br />
	Securely in a haven found.<br />
	Assured by a promise sound.
</p>

<p>
	It's walnut and about 6x6x6.
</p>

	This was a tough project for me, and a small tribute in my way to Krenov. Rickey's (aka Spanky) curly ambrosia maple is the star of this show and makes me look better than I am. I've said before casework is not my favorite, I've leaned more and more to the sculptured stuff the past few years. But I'd have to say this project was not only a joy to make but a real challenge.
</p>

<p>
	Along with the above comments, I really wanted this to be a project journal. I've come to believe when you show your work as you are doing it, you become better from the experience. I also love following project journals and I'm bummed there have been fewer and fewer on here. I didn't want to be part of the problem. And no, I'm not a facebook guy and I'm not moving over to that format, won't do it.
</p>

<p>
	Ok, so here goes. I did a wine cabinet a month ago, it turned out well and I had planned to use the basis of that design to make a new liquor cabinet and buffet table. The old ones I have now were made by me 20 years ago and have held up well, but are blocky and unrefined. These will be great to pass on to the kids as they move out. But I wanted to update and get more refined pieces now that my skill level has started to progress. This cabinet has the same flow and leg contours as the wine cabinet had. It's 4' high and about 30" wide. It's made out of walnut I harvested and milled my self and some beautiful curly ambrosia maple that I got from Rickey.
</p>

<p>
	Here are a few pictures in production stage. I took these when I thought I could still get this in a project journal. This is a pic of a side of the cabinet, the 2 legs are attached to a panel with dados via loose tenons (aka Dominos).
</p>

<p>

<p>
	A view of dry asembly, the second pic shows I put 3 cross supports dovetailed intro the side panels.
</p>

<p>
	For the drawers I used a center guide rail, I like the simplicity of this and the predictability of this;
</p>

<p>
	<img alt="651410149_LiqCab4.jpg.a213b68c33ac439cd465e212fde1e09b.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="53018" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2019_04/651410149_LiqCab4.jpg.a213b68c33ac439cd465e212fde1e09b.jpg"></p>

<p>
	Pic with the underside of the drawer;
</p>

<p>
	<img alt="927495179_LiqCab5.jpg.dbeb9785af0e54a323108a45c0aa2b06.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="53019" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2019_04/927495179_LiqCab5.jpg.dbeb9785af0e54a323108a45c0aa2b06.jpg"></p>

<p>
	The doors were a challenge, and I'm not the best at them. I posted on these in regards to what hinge to use. I settled on a simple solution, but I do wish I attempted a offset knife hinge. My opening wasn't perfectly square. When I put the doors in with just dry assembly, here's what I got;
</p>

<p>
	<img alt="1597863670_LiqCab7.jpg.92f9f07b9cc608141c60c74f1d8ebc69.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="53021" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2019_04/1597863670_LiqCab7.jpg.92f9f07b9cc608141c60c74f1d8ebc69.jpg"></p>

<p>
	The gap between the doors closes when the top hinges are placed. So I used hide glue for the longer set time and for my ability to manipulate the joint;
</p>

<p>
	<img alt="891156394_LiqCab6.jpg.873b50cca83d24d33f4b6d7b8f0ff7cd.jpg" class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="53020" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2019_04/891156394_LiqCab6.jpg.873b50cca83d24d33f4b6d7b8f0ff7cd.jpg"></p>

<p>
	I put blue tape in the opening to prevent an "issue". Here's a pic with the top hinges in place, presto no gap left;

<p>
	I let these doors sit in place until the hide glue cured. Then I hand planed the hinge side of the door to develop a uniform opening from top to bottom. Since I used a no mortise hinge I needed a slight gap for the hinges.

	Here's the final assembly, notice the matching figure of the 2 drawers fronts;

	My sister-in-law is vey active in her church now that she has retired and helps my wife and I with dog sitting should we get a chance to go somewhere and I saw this on YouTube and decided to make one for her. Made from some scrap cherry from a previous project.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2025_12/IMG_0252.jpeg.fad4d889c1d97205b879b96e845557ab.jpeg" data-fileid="83902" data-fileext="jpeg" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="83902" data-ratio="75.00" width="800" alt="IMG_0252.thumb.jpeg.d0dc52aba1809c6c3dac72269ebf52c5.jpeg" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2025_12/IMG_0252.thumb.jpeg.d0dc52aba1809c6c3dac72269ebf52c5.jpeg" /></a>
</p>

<p>
	It was a fun project and I decided to make one for my daughter and granddaughter. Well, the list kept growing and I decided to make more for other women in my family and friends that have made a difference in my life. So after digging thru my wood stack, I came up with these.
</p>

<p>
	Walnut
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2025_12/IMG_0251.jpeg.54567bada3fca8f913603da9daee4232.jpeg" data-fileid="83903" data-fileext="jpeg" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="83903" data-ratio="75.00" width="800" alt="IMG_0251.thumb.jpeg.418cebbce67bc93adbada4a882c4f03d.jpeg" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2025_12/IMG_0251.thumb.jpeg.418cebbce67bc93adbada4a882c4f03d.jpeg" /></a>
</p>

<p>
	Ambrosia maple
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2025_12/IMG_0250.jpeg.a9649f2355bde764ef45e584602442b1.jpeg" data-fileid="83904" data-fileext="jpeg" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="83904" data-ratio="75.00" width="800" alt="IMG_0250.thumb.jpeg.9bfd6c51628493889f29a8ccd86c5739.jpeg" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2025_12/IMG_0250.thumb.jpeg.9bfd6c51628493889f29a8ccd86c5739.jpeg" /></a>
</p>

<p>
	Thirteen total.
</p>

	By the time we came up with the idea to build this small turntable stand/record cabinet as a Christmas gift, it was too late to get it done by Christmas.  But as it turns out that was a good thing because when we gave my son in law a gift wrapped scrap of wood and told him what it represented, he asked if he could observe to whole build process.
</p>

<p>
	I was more than happy to have him in the shop but it did add a few twists to the process.  It's a little bit of a challenge to do all you thinking plotting and planning out load.  The other thing, it has been a long time since I worked on a project where my work time was dictated by days off, his not mine.  He was surprised to find out that the only mechanical fasteners were six screws and six figure 8's to hold the top on.
</p>

<p>
	Made from Cherry, here're a couple of pictures.

	This is the first table of the new year. Several more to go. My brother has some 32" slabs that were cut from a (biologist estimate) 200 year old oak on his farm in Iowa. About 15 years ago. He has asked me to make several pieces of furniture for him, out of the slabs. First is this coffee table. Then a couple of table tops for his and a friend's pontoon boats. Also a live edge sitting bench and coat rack for his entryway. After that, a bookshelf. My list of 10 projects for myself this winter, is on hold...lol

	A few months ago we bought 12 five gallon food grade buckets to build a bucket garden.  At first we were going to build it in a 3x4 configuration but decided to build it in a 2x6 configuration instead.  I bought the treated 2x4's and engaged our 14-year old grandson to assist.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#383a3b;font-size:15px;">
	We cut the 10' 2x4's to the proper length for the long stretchers and since he had limited time that's all we did for a few days.  But he wanted to help build it so I waited until he could help again.  When he was available his best friend wanted to help, as well.  So Monday afternoon, the day before Valentine's day (critical info for later) I picked them up from school and we hit the shop.
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#383a3b;font-size:15px;">
	Three hours later we had a finished bucket stand!  And they learned a lot about working in a shop environment as well as using tools brand new to them, so it was a good day.  When my wife got home from work I showed her the bucket stand and told her that since I'm a guy and the next day was Valentine's Day, then Happy Valentine's Day!  <img alt=":D" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/default_biggrin.png" srcset="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/biggrin@2x.png 2x" title=":D" width="20" />
</p>

<p style="background-color:#ffffff;color:#383a3b;font-size:15px;">
	It didn't matter to her that I should have built this months ago so that was a good thing.  Now we have to get dirt and begin planting whatever she wants to grow.
</p>

	Another project is done. My brother, and his neighbor both wanted upgrades from the cheap plastic tables that come with a pontoon boat. Here are a few pics from them coming out of one big, old slab of red oak. No glue joints! Pics of drilling the cupholder holes, also. The oval table originally had 2 cupholders. Owner wanted 2 more, so now he has 4.<img alt=":)" data-emoticon="" height="20" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/default_smile.png" srcset="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/emoticons/smile@2x.png 2x" title=":)" width="20" />
</p>

<p>
	I don't have finished pictures yet, but I'll take some and post later. PS, the round table has crazy, beautiful figure all over. Definitely furniture worthy.

	Been a busy winter for me. Live edge coffee table, sitting bench with overhead live edge coat rack, pair of pontoon tables, router table, walking canes, couple misc projects, and finally this horizontal book case. All made from 200 year old, 32" wide slabs of rough sawn red oak (from the same tree).
</p>

<p>
	The joinery on this book case is stopped dado's. 1" solid oak.

	There hadn't been very many posts this past weekend, so decided to post a quick win project I did. Just a tissue holder that the wife wanted, but knocked it out in a day.
</p>

<p>
	Made of mahogany and some nice curly maple, with mitered corners. I don't like the holders where the box falls out when you pick them up, so created a sliding bottom, hidden in the miters.
</p>

<p>
	One coat of Rubio, so need to put on another, then some wax for it to be finished.
</p>

<p>
	Got to love quick win projects.

	So again I beg your pardon on the pictures.  I completed the piece this spring.  It's about 6 x 4 inches and made from Honduran mahogany.   I call the piece Whirl.

	Back in June of last year, Steve, a friend of mine and I drove to Tennessee to visit <a contenteditable="false" data-ipshover="" data-ipshover-target="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/profile/15288-richarda/?do=hovercard" data-mentionid="15288" href="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/profile/15288-richarda/" rel="">@RichardA</a> (Rick) and <a contenteditable="false" data-ipshover="" data-ipshover-target="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/profile/23274-spanky/?do=hovercard" data-mentionid="23274" href="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/profile/23274-spanky/" rel="">@Spanky</a> (Rickey) On our trip home, we were fortunate to have lunch with <a contenteditable="false" data-ipshover="" data-ipshover-target="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/profile/14065-wtnhighlander/?do=hovercard" data-mentionid="14065" href="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/profile/14065-wtnhighlander/" rel="">@wtnhighlander</a> (Ross) and his son Cody. <br />
	While visiting with Rick, he took Steve and I to his shop which by then was void of all major woodworking power tools. He had decided that Father Time had taken it’s toll on the steadiness of his legs, back and hands and had sold all of the tools that would hurt him the most but he still had a nice array of hand tools which Steve and I acquired from him.
</p>

<p>
	I noticed on Rick’s workbench was a partially finished cherry table that just needed some tweaking and glue. He told us that it was to go to a good friend of his named Betsy and he was unable to finish it before he sold the tools. I offered to bring it back to Houston and once finished, get it back to him somehow. The only glued up section was a nice live edge top and the other pieces were dry fitted. I took several pics of the dry fitted table and also labeled the individual pieces with blue tape at their junctures. We disassembled the table, wrapped the parts in a shipping blanket and loaded it up for the trip back home. We jokingly said that the project was so tough that it took two of us to finish it. <br />
	<br />
	For the first 2 or 3 months after I returned, I would trim a piece here and there and add a little Titebond between my other projects until it looked like he had intended for it to look and gave the whole thing several coats of ARS semi-gloss. <br />
	I don’t know if the table was taking too much room in my shop, if I needed to get out of town for a while or just wanted to go see Tennessee again but my wife and I decided to load it into her Traverse and head back to the Nashville area.  After spending a couple of days with Rick and Rickey, we made our way down to visit my wife’s relatives in Louisiana. <br />
	Rick had notified Betsy of our pending arrival and she met us at Rick’s house to pick up the table. She seemed quite pleased with the results and we all had a good time making it happen.

	Just finished up this entryway bench for our front door. Poplar and scrap plywood for the base was painted with Sherwin Williams Emerald trim urethane enamel paint. The top is walnut with Rubio Monocoat and a coat of the maintenance oil. Looking forward to seeing how it holds up.

	I think I've posted in the past, that every winter I build a few walking canes. I generally give them to relatives. Hey, we are all going to need them sometime...lol
</p>

<p>
	Here, I am drilling the hole square and plum, to the shaft to accept the product that will join the head and shaft. I've been using 5/8" threaded rod, and on this batch I am going to make and try 5/8" solid wood dowels out of oak. The cane heads were all made out of 200 year old red oak cutoffs from a couple projects this winter.

	I found myself with a bit of free time last weekend. I’ve been itching to get back in the shop so I threw together a quick impromptu project.
</p>

<p>
	I grabbed some bits of walnut and maple off the shelf and started cutting. With the pieces I had, I ended up making a 2 level paper tray for my desk. Moving quickly I accidentally swapped the stock I had planned for the top vs bottom shelves, so the better match ended up on the bottom. Stopped dados in the sides to retain the ‘shelves.’ The top one ended up rather thin and flexy, so I glued a couple thin strips to the underside and clamped it bowing up in the middle slightly. We’ll see how that lasts over time, but it stiffened it up significantly. <br />
	<br />
	 Quick shellac finish is under way. <br />

	Another project that I am halfway done with, is a couple pieces for my brother's entryway. The bench is done, and the coat rack is milled and resting. Needs to be put together and finished. Pics will follow. His entryway is small, and leads right to the walkout basement. So, you kinda have to scoot by this bench to go downstairs. So, it's only 12" wide. 3" aprons makes it very stable, tho. Shelf is for low shoes, hats, and gloves.
</p>

<p>
	The gaps alongside of the shelf, on the sides, are intentional. #1, I'm paranoid about wood movement. #2, the shelf is installed on the taper of the legs. One part touches the legs, the other doesn't, because of sitting at the taper.
</p>

	But woodworking none the less.
</p>

<p>
	Forty  plus years ago the first thing we did to the house after moving in was build a pergola on the back of the house to create some shade.  It was a project that my Dad and I did over a couple of weekends.  But the time had come to tear the old beast down before it fell down and build a new one.  It is all rough Con-Hart Redwood,  6" X 6" posts, 2" X 6" joist and 2" X 2" staves on top.
</p>

<p>
	<a class="ipsAttachLink ipsAttachLink_image" href="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2024_11/IMG_1247.JPG.66df0546636717f6c8bf745928681549.JPG" data-fileid="80487" data-fileext="JPG" rel=""><img class="ipsImage ipsImage_thumbnailed" data-fileid="80487" data-ratio="133.33" width="600" alt="IMG_1247.thumb.JPG.b5f6262bf3e03626203a047163398527.JPG" src="https://www.woodtalkonline.com/uploads/monthly_2024_11/IMG_1247.thumb.JPG.b5f6262bf3e03626203a047163398527.JPG" /></a>
</p>

<p>
	Now I just have to get all the patio furniture moved back.
