  1. I took my son for his driving exam today, then whatched him drive home in my rearview mirror. His "new" car may be several years old, but you'd think it just rolled off the assembly line... Sorry, too dark for photos, this is a dealer pic.

  2. I cut the veneer for the inside of the sides. It is fiddleback English Sycamore. I also taped it and got it ready for the press to find out that I don't have any lightener for the glue. I ordered some and it will arrive on Thursday. So, I shifted gears and started to veneer the shelves. I used the track saw because these are much longer cuts. Here is how I cut veneer with the track saw. I put the sheets on a sheet of mdf. Then tape all the veneer together so they don't move during the cut. This is the blade that I use to get nice clean cuts. Once the sheets are cu

  3. Thanks All, I made a few inserts out of scrap today. You can really crank these things out if you gang them for operations. I'm hoping reconfiguration as needs change will be easy.

  9. Hello Fellas, It's been a while! I am building a record cabinet for a client. They wanted a record cabinet for their records because his dad passed and left him all of his records. As such, the records have sentimental value to him, and he wants them on display. Here is the design. The wood for the project is going to be ebony veneer, Fiddleback Sycamore veneer and holly. Lets get into this! First, I am joining all of the veneer too MDF. There are some major downsides to MDF though, the main one being weight and sag. So, the solution I came up with is making my own lumber c

  10. Despite being a bit more expensive and different color than western red, wood database lists it as being durable for outdoor use. I'd recommend using any finish that you would use on western red cedar. My recommendation is to use an oil finish that does not form a film. Penofin is a good example. Oil finishes need refreshing every year or 2 which constitutes a bit of continual maintenance but it's a simple wipe on application. Film forming finishes will peel over time and may last 1-2 years longer but will require magnitudes more maintenance when the time comes.

  12. Congress passed the Real ID Act back in 2005. Since each state manages their own driver’s licenses, there’s no consistency in type or effectiveness of security features across states. Real ID sets minimum standards to enable it to be used for federal identification in addition to state identification. It will be required (or passport, which is another federal identification) to enter some federal facilities and to board flights (TSA is a federal program) and some other federally managed programs. The new deadline is 10/1/2021. When we moved I had to get a normal driver’s license instea

  13. Real ID was not ever going to be needed to fly, unless you did not have a passport. Real ID is supposed to be a cheaper step between old ID security and passport security. No clue if Walmart here wants it for ammunition.

  14. Real ID is just a new license. You were supposed to need it to fly as of Oct 2020 but that obviously got pushed back.

  15. Never heard of this ID? Kinda damn scary? I guess we had better cool this conversation before it gets sideways and Kev is forced to step in?

  17. Got the last set of doors up. Will need to put some trim up to hide the gaps around the sides. Not sure if we’ll match the existing door trim or take it all out and replace it when I do the rest of the doors. Before and after pics below. Need to get some knobs too.

  18. The land down to about 100' of the horse stables you see is mine. Between the stables and the mountains is a small residential community (Eldorado) that's hidden from my view by the ridge between us. No Ted or Jane. My view won't change as long as I'm here.

  19. Yeah Coop the original drawing didn't work. The reason is if you look at the right side of the rhombuses they do not go through the center line. The picture is misleading because of the photo. The larger (rhombi?) are the center and outside. There are only four rhombi with boarder attached to them. I originally didn't think there was going to be that much wast. I had it planed for the grain to run with the side of the rhombus. I didn't like that and wanted the grain to be vertical. This caused a lot of waste. Not all is lost though because I'm sure I can find a use for it late

  20. The first thing I did this morning was make a jig to cut out the rhombuses. First, I made a basic mdf table with a straight edge as a fence. Then I cut a board that is the exact width as the rhombus. Next, I cut the veneer into sheets and made a packet to trim all of the edges. I was going to use my track saw to do this but I ended up using the table saw. This is the blade I use to cut veneer. I found that a lamination blade or aluminum blade work the best on veneer. I taped the joints together and cut two sides with my mdf rhombus jig. Once I had two sides

  21. Yeah Chet, the top will have a glass shelf. There are a couple of reasons I haven't been on in a while. The main reason was two things happened pretty close to each other. My second daughter was born, and Tapatalk logged me out. With having a new baby and trying to figure out how to get that to work just never worked itself out. I would go back from time to time to see if tapatalk would let me log back in but it never did. My business has also been so busy. When I would do anything that wasn't work, I felt like I should be working instead of doing that. I just recently realized that my m
