  1. Thanks everyone. .. it's a surprise for my husband, so I won't be able to work on it until next week, but thank you all so much for your input!!! Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  2. I have a borrowed jigsaw, a stanley handsaw, a drill and a hand sander. That's about it. Although if I start over I will definitely be getting some clamps and a square... The problem I'm running into with removing an end is those darn nails
  3. Complete beginner, first project mistakes. Ok so there were a number of things I did wrong when I started my project the other day. Mostly being that I was trying to get it done quickly and.. well as you can imagine it just went downhill from there. Now I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to undo what I did or if I just start over (I really don't want to start over). So I'm making a beer caddy for my husband - not the awesome one I was going to the last time I posted as I just didn't have the right tools for that one, I decided to go with this one https://www.ryobitools.com/nation/projects/3304. You can probably tell by looking at the pictures what my problem is. Never mind the fact that I obviously am in desperate need of a square to help me get my lines straight. So the top part (that the handle will eventually go in... is totally off center.. which means that the beer bottles won't sit properly on one side, thus making it impossibly to add the side rails on that side. And... as you can see in the 2nd picture... after gluing it.... I nailed it in you would think that I would have looked beforehand.. alas. This is is turning out to be a really good learning experience (don't get me started on making the cuts with a jigsaw without having any clamps). So.. my question is... can I recover from this? Is there a way to fix that middle piece without destroying everything else or did I put the nails in my own coffin (so to speak). I thought about adding more wood on the bottom and the side (I know it would look pretty bad)... or maybe sawing off part of the handle... but maybe the fix would take longer than just buying some new wood and starting over. Thoughts?
  4. We do have a lumber specialty store http://www.columber.net/ as well as a woodcraft although I didn't care for the demeanor of the guy at the woodcraft store, so I'll probably go to the specialty store (plus it smells so good in there). They have tons of different woods there Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  5. Thanks for all the great advice. I will check to see if any of my neighbors have a drill press. If not I'll definitely look into a side handle and make sure I clamp things down tight. Any recommendations on wood type to use? Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  6. So for my first project I'm planning on making a beer caddy ( http://imgur.com/a/1Z18w ) for my husband for his birthday. Any advice? I've borrowed a jigsaw and am planning on buying a hole saw and forstner bit for my drill. Haven't decided what kind of wood or finish I'm going to use (or how I'm going to sand down the pegs).. and come to think of it I probably need some sort of eye protection and clamp. I'm sure a neighbor has something I can borrow. Anyways, I just thought I'd get your opinions. I figured a beer caddy is a good first project.. maybe if I start off with something my husband can use he'll be more amenable to my spending money on the hobby.... ;-)

    Hand saw?

Is there any thoughts regarding a brand based on a hand size? I looked at the Bad Axe website... and one day I may be ready to spend that kind of money on a saw, but not today. But I notice they customize based on hand size - and based on their measurements I would need an extra small. I guess I probably need to just get into a store and handle a couple and see how they feel. I just wondered if there was a brand that maybe ran small...?

    Hand saw?

Looking to buy my first hand saw, found this disston back saw on Craigslist. .. good buy or do you think it will need work on it first? https://cosprings.craigslist.org/tls/5143010116.html Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
  10. Step 1... find the workbench the previous owners left in the garage... step 2 find a place for all the junk it's hiding under... sigh....
  11. Hi! I'm very new to woodworking.. I have a lot of ideas of things I want to build - a gaming table, some barstools, maybe a playhouse outback. But.. I have no woodworking tools.. well, we have a drill. I've gotten a bunch of woodworking books from the library and read through a number of them. I'm hoping to start out with some small projects that will get me started, and I'm planning on taking a couple classes in May at our local Woodcraft store on using a table saw and a router. There don't seem to be any other classes offered in our immediate area on woodworking though except through the store (I live in Colorado Springs). I'm hoping to be able to take one of their other woodworking classes, but I think my husband is apprehensive on spending a lot of money on tools and classes when he's not sure I'm going to stick with it (a valid concern.. what if I start doing stuff and find out I hate it or I suck at it). So... now that I've totally lost my train of thought. Yes so I'm new =) I'm a stay at home mom with twin 3 year olds who are in preschool half time (until the end of May). Looking forward to looking through the forums and getting some advice.
  12. oh my gosh, I am soooo excited. I'm brand new to woodworking (as in, I have lots of ideas but no tools) and one of the things that got me interested was to build a gaming table (my husband and I are D&D geeks). We bought the plans for the ultimate gaming table (see picture below) awhile back and I finally decided I wanted to build it. But.. if I could build a better one (seriously, the Sultan above is sooo awesome) that would be even better! And hey, I even have all summer to figure out what I'm doing before the build comes out in September! Although I probably won't make ours dual purpose as we are geeky enough to have a room dedicated to gaming =) Just wanted to say Hi and express my excitement!!!! Oops.. and now I'm late to take my rugrats to preschool... heh...
