  2. Hi; I'm planning to do an extendable dining table with veneer [possibly beech or maple] with a pattern of alternating grain directions. The substrate will probably be MDF with a solid matching wood edge in a "stingray" profile. The intent is to use a clear polyurethane finish. My question is what thickness of veneer would stand up to years of use? Local retail shops have both backed and unbacked sheets but they are pretty thin.
