Anyone have any experience working with Mushroom Wood? I picked some up yesterday, for some doors I'm building. Great texture, but splintery. Its dry, but needs some prep, power washing, etc. any advice? thanks

I don't use my Dewalt cordless jig saw a ton and when I do- its mostly rough cuts to break down stock. This week I was doing some construction and needed to cut out some 2x4's to accommodate outlet boxes & switches. The blade really seem to drift. Its not the 1st time this is happened, but it was pretty annoying. Am I using the wrong blade (Indeed using a wood rough cut blade)? Too fast? Is this a common issue? Thoughts?

I am actually going the other way --adapting it for my festool hose.

thanks for all the replies. I try not to use hardware, never mind screws in my projects. One last questions: What is the preference: square or Torx (star headed)? Lighten up Francis. I asked a simple question, and I'm not upset, nor do I think people "jumped all over me". This is a woodworking forum.

and this is the problem with forums.

No, I am asking what people use and why.... thanks--thats a helpful answer.

I don't use a lot of screws either, but there are plenty of plans and magazine articles that include the use of screws in projects.

So your saying aesthetically you don't approve? You don't usually see exposed screws and I screws probably would not be used without glue in most cases.

Curious who uses drywall screws when building furniture. I watch videos, read articles and plans and they specify certain types of screws, certainly not drywall screws. I know drywall screws aren't always the best in certain applications as they can shear in half, but with furniture I don't see the the disadvantage. What am I missing?

the fleam is what make me think it was a cross cut.

Hello-- I am shopping for a rip saw. This ebay listing says its a rip saw. Looks like a crosscut to me. Am I correct? Thanks http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sharp-Disston-Sons-D8-26-Thumbhole-Skew-Back-Rip-Saw-1896-1917-5-TPI-INV-/112279633290?hash=item1a24633d8a:g:FCcAAOSw-0xYhrtn

My son is into archery and wants to build a recurve bow for a school project this year. Has anyone here built one? Can you point us in the direction of some valuable resources that you found? thanks!

I am doing research on craft centers and what is available out there. Here in Brooklyn there a few places woodworking centers or Maker centers that you can go take classes in any number of crafts from woodworking, metal work, crafts, etc. Makeville, Mokuchi, and a now defunct place called 3rd Ward come to mind. Some are member driven with bench, tool and space rentals, some are more class oriented. Are you a member of a center like this or have one near you? I've been reading more and more about such centers popping up. I am putting together a list of similar center around the country (and planet) and would love to hear about a place like this in your neck of the woods. Links and feed back about them would be awesome. thanks!

I bought a Stanley no. 81 scraper a while back and I am just now taking it out to clean it up and give it a try. I certainly needs a sharpening, which I'm working on now. The blade is cambered for sure, but not evenly. The rosewood base is curved. I assume this is from years of use, but after taking it apart I now wonder. So my question is: the wood base should be flat like any other plane correct? thanks!!

Curious if anyone here is a member of Tom Fidgen's Unplugged Life? Big fan here, but It's $20 a month and I'm not sure what you get.

See that seems like a smart plan.
