Madkrafter
I agree with PB, maybe check out iMovie first. It is 20 times cheaper ($15 vs $300) than Final Cut Pro X but when you want to graduate "up", what you learn in iMovie will carry over nicely to Final Cut (there is a free trial available). I'm also a photographer and went to a seminar about filmmaking on DSLR's I haven't done any yet (too scared to learn video editing ), but it's a great resource. They have info on DIY lighting, but be warned - they are an artsy bunch. http://stillmotionblog.com/ And as I learned in that seminar - The most important thing about video is audio. Camera-based mics are last resort. A good setup is something like a Zoom H4N with a Lav mic to get good consistent sound. Hope that helps in your video rabbit hole. Dan S
You might also want to consider a bridge camera, they are the ones between point and shoots, and DSLRs. My current camera is a bridge (Nikon p100 circa 2010), and I love it. It's only down side is it doesn't have external mic support, though vary few non professional cameras did in 2010. However the recently announced Nikon P530, & P600 are rumored to have external mic support. If they actually have it, I'm getting a new camera. Tpt life
I am an audio geek. PM TIODS about a good way to build a shotgun mic. If you can do this you can get away with some pretty crappy ambient zones and still achieve good primary signal. Sorry to TIODS if volunteering him was a bad idea:-)
dwacker
There is always voice over. For me its a no brainer it covers up mistakes and foul language.
