Bombarde16
Home stretch. I'm finishing the uprights. Decided to do a pair with heavier, spiral finials. I'll probably do the other pair with the same finials as in the prototype. Carving is fun but these things need to get under their respective trees soon. davewyo
Wonderful little detail Rob!
Bombarde16
Two spirals done. Next two uprights will have the same finials as Follansbee's prototype. Fun trick and it's not nearly as difficult as it looks; I see myself doing this again in future projects. All done with a scrap of paper (no real measuring, per se) a saw and a bench chisel. With hindsight, it strikes me that this is a detail best used in the middle of a spindle, not at the end. Oh well. Santa's sleigh leaves soon and I just need to get these done. Popular Post Bombarde16
Done with the uprights, time to chisel the steps in the ratchet arms. This particular piece is a dense, curly chunk from near a crotch in the log. Tough going and then CRACK. I have no idea where this mallet came from. I think I got it from a church flea market years ago. The head was merely pegged into the handle with a 3/8" dowel. Junk, obviously. Right now I'm a.) hoping that I didn't actually pay anything for this and b.) amazed that it lasted as long as it did given the construction. Ordinarily, I'd look at this as a fun opportunity to make a new carver's mallet. Now, however, it's an interruption I can ill afford. Alas. Sunday evening was therefore given over to crafting this beast. The head comes from a chunk of 4x4 that I inherited from an acquaintance's deck project. He called it "Brazilian Cedar", which is probably a catch all term for the myriad imports used for outdoor construction. Works like just about everything else from south of the equator: hard as a rock, murder on the tools, polishes up like glass, blah blah blah. The handle is a scrap of cherry, turned to a 7/8" tenon which is epoxied all the way through the head. Total weight is 420g. Would've been nice to craft something with a taper or a wedged tenon, but this needed to get done so I could get back to elf mode. Bombarde16
Carved my ratchets. The new mallet worked like a champ. An hour of tapping a plastic chisel handle and not even so much as a divot on the mallet head. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bombarde16
Who's a blinking idiot who can't follow his own plans? I'm a blinking idiot who can't follow his own plans. Correct length for the feet is 1 3/4". Somehow, the one on the left ended up being 2" long. Design mod! Just make another foot to match and call it correct. Bombarde16
Four feet done. Time to book some time with a drill press. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bart
Something I've never done in my life, turning and carving. Must talk to wife and convince her I NEED a lathe. Thanks for sharing.
Bombarde16
Yup. Forty-eight hours before Christmas and these still aren't done. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Bombarde16
OK, well call these "done" with an asterisk. One has been given to a coworker who's getting moved to a new office after the new year. Here it is on the wreckage of his current desk as he packs up. The other is still in pieces. I've fitted and pre finished it, but it needs to go in my luggage tomorrow. Final assembly will happen when it gets to its final destination. I probably won't get to stage a glamour photo of it, but oh well. Interesting design and thanks to Mr. Follansbee for popularizing it. Bombarde16
Turns out I was able to get a glamour shot after all. Happy new year, all. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
davewyo
Nicely done, Rob. It's amazing that it was once a few chunks of firewood.
