Hickory Wood

Ash is slightly cheaper than hickory at my yard but Tom is right about the availability...however it's not the widths that are problematic, it's the thickness.  I frequently see stacks come through the yard that are chock full of 9" and wider boards, but I never see stock thicker than 5/4.  The reason for this, from what I gather, is that hickory and kilns don't get along so well, and the thicker stock wants to pull itself apart during the drying process and is highly susceptible to case hardening.  Why this is, scientifically, I'm not sure.  But it's what I've heard.  Either way it makes it tough to build anything out of hickory that requires 8/4 material.  YMMV...perhaps you have thick hickory in your yard.  We don't.
