Chet
Is there a recommended spacing for the dog holes that would be used with a tail vise?

wtnhighlander
Anything less than the maximum travel of your vise?

In all seriousness, wtnhighlander is right. Just be sure that you can clamp any length of wood (vise travel minus an inch?)

Popular Post krtwood
See how far the vise moves in the amount of time it takes you to get annoyed at having to move it. A little less than that. So about every half an inch

Maybe you should get a job at Festool so you can explain to them why 96 mm spacing on the MFT is too big or the reach of their hold down clamps is too small. krtwood
I should add, since you said tail vise, usually the tail vise has more than one hole and they are spaced differently than the holes in the bench. So if your bench holes were 6" apart and you had two holes in the tail at 3" apart you'd never have to move the vise more than 3".
SawDustB
New bench build Chet? No Mat, I just added the Veritas inset vise to the bench I just finished. How do you like it? I'm considering that as an option for my bench build. Was it easy to install?

Actually, you'd never have to move the vice more than 1.5" If you had to move the vice 3", then just use the other hole on the vice and the next dog hole and you are spot on. [edit: 4.5" spacing gives a max move of 0.75"]
Jerry_in_SD
I don't have a tail vice. I put mine on 6" spacing. Then I decided to use those Veritas Bench Puppies. Unfortunately, the reach of the puppies needs holes on 4" centers. Thus, I loose a lot of utility from my dog holes.
wdwerker
Add 2 1/4" spacer block that the dog goes through to keep it from popping out under pressure.

Sorry Steve, could you expand on that? I didn't get it at all.

Was it easy to install? I really like mine - easy to install - just rout the correct shaped mortise in the bench-top and screw it down. It has about 4" of travel and two holes ... so my dog holes spaced 6" apart work fine. It does occasionally clog up with chips but it's easy enough to clear. I'm a fan of the low-profile insert for planing thin stock. It's all aluminium so it won't totally ruin a cutting edge if you accidentally nick it.
