What length pipe for pipe clamps

Recommended Posts

Everything depends on what your building but 4' pipe usually works fine for cabinetry. After you have eno ugh pipe clamps you'll start changing the sizes up for more unique projects.....

What in the world is a BORG?

I've seen that before too and always wondered the same!

And when you're standing outside beside one it kinda looks like a BORG cube & they do their best to assimilate you.

I have 4 1/2" pipe clamps and one with a 48" extension meaning a threaded coupler for the end of one to make it a 8-9 footer and I have actually found a use for it pulling a bent deck board back into place once. Other than that I have very little use for a 8 foot bar clamp.  When I first made it I thought I would use it a lot, but that was back in my naive days when everything was possible.
Mostly I use those ever lovable HF aluminum clamps that I've modified with wooden inserts to prevent twist in them. (BTW, I found 11/16ths x 1" to be about the perfect size for beefing up those HF aluminum clamps. Putting a small nail or screw in the end doesn't hurt them.) Anything much wider tends to bind especially in damp conditions.
Just curious, does HF sell anything that doesn't need some kind of modifications other than perhaps wrenches and such?
OH! I finally bit the bullet and ordered a set of 36" Dubuque Clampworks clamps .Kind of pricey, but what the heck. Social Security has ensured that I'm forever independently wealthy with my monthly stipend of a few hundred bucks. You never know...I might even acquire a few more before someone finds a need to make me a deluxe pine box for the inevitable.. Heck, maybe I'll put those deluxe clamps to good use and build my own permanent resting place.
