Keggers
I was asked by a VFW Post in a neighboring town to make them a new plaque for their past commanders. They need a new plaque that is wider and longer than the one in the below photo. I don't usually build things for people outside my family but since it's the VFW asking I couldn't say no. Making the plaque will be no problem. That is pretty straight forward. My concern is routing the recess for the past commander plate. I have an idea of how this can be accomplished but never having done anything like this before I thought I'd seek advice on the best method. I don't have a CNC or access to one so this will be a router project. My "plan" is to make a template approximately 1/4" smaller than the actual plate and then route a profile around the template using some type of 1/4" router bit. Then following up with a clean up of the middle. Is this the best method to accomplish this task? I've included a photo of the post commander plate for reference. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Chet
I think I would make the template larger then the plate, that way while you are cleaning up the middle the template will be in place and keep you from accidentally going outside of the space needed. I also think that I would do that part of the project before doing any other sizing or shaping of the plaque that way you have the most surface to rest the template on.
Popular Post wdwerker
They make bushing sets that fit in your router base. One size rides around the outside of the plate and you cut a intermediate template. Then you change bushings to cut the recess that should fit the plate. It's been awhile since I've done it. I think I remember a FWW article explained the combinations of bits and bushings needed. Definitly practice on scrap !
wtnhighlander
The bushing thing Steve mentioned is good to make the border of the recess. To hog out the interior, start in the middle and work outwards to maintain support for the router base.

Keggers
Thank you for all the good suggestions. I think I'll route the outer edge and then clean up the middle. I certainly will practice on a scrap piece or two. I'll let you know how it goes.
