houstonwoodworker
I need to glue solid stock to plywood. I know if I use wood glue, it will crack as the solid stock expands and contracts. Are there any other adhesive options that allow some movement so the wood won’t crack? ..Kev
How much structural support is needed?
wdwerker
You could use something like construction adhesive. It has a little flexibility. If a wide piece of cross grain wood is glued to plywood it will turn into a potato chip as the solid wood expands & contracts . Thin pieces should be ok, under 1/4" thick. houstonwoodworker
Not structural at all, it’s a decoration. Good point about construction adhesive. I will use a very small amount to hold in place and then I’ll put in screws from the back. Thanks!!
Eric.
Gluing solid wood to a stable substrate is not a good idea no matter what adhesive you use. Construction adhesive has a tiny bit of give to it at first but after a year or two it's about as hard as a rock. The question is: how wide are the pieces of hardwood you're gluing? Up to around 4" I wouldn't worry about it...beyond that, I would.
houstonwoodworker
6” so I’ll just have to use screws with no adhesive
