Adopting a puppy/young dog

Recommended Posts

My new pup came from a facebook post in one of those "for sale in your town" groups. They were not allowed to put a price for a dog. We got her because we were literally the only people that didn't ask "how much for the dog?" She figured.. if you have to ask, you can't afford to take care of a giant dog. Some people will give the animals to anyone so I"m glad there is some protections in place.

Congrats Steve!  Unless you are giving him Jack and water everyday, Boozer doesn't fit.  So without looking back to the first post was this one of the 2 you had photos of?

No, all the local rescue groups were so slow with the approval process I got discouraged. Started looking for breeders that might have a litter. Found him 5 minutes after he was posted. Drove 1 1/2 hours to go meet him , then got stuck in rush hour coming home with him. He curled up on his bed and snoozed most of the way. But he was quick to pop up and look out the window if he heard something.

That is one cool looking Pup.  I don't know why but when you said you needed to come up with a name I thought he looked like a Reggie to me... don't know why.

Considering "Groot "  like the character in those Marvel films. Guardians of the Galaxy

Awe Groot was my favorite character in that movie! He looks like he's going to be a lot of fun.

It's kinda sad that the pet adoption process is so involved that it's easier to go to a breeder. Doesn't really say much for rescuing pets.

We had a pet raccoon when I was a kid.  He would grab an ice cube out of my dads "Jack & Coke " then dad would pick up his drink and it would be cloudy with muddy foot prints on the glass.  We set him free when mating season came around. A female raccoon kept visiting our yard. A few months later they can back with 3 kits. They were skittish but ate from a bowl right outside the sliding glass door.

We had a family of raccoons that would visit every night when I was younger. I would sit outside on the deck with them and relax. It was a mama and three kits. The kits were pretty standoffish at first, but became more and more comfortable with me as mama did. I have always loved raccoons.

He's beautiful, congrats!

We adopted the brindle female in my profile pic and went through the interview process too. When we first thought about adopting a dog I balked at being interviewed and was initially put off by it. I was offended that we would have to be "worthy" of adopting one of their dogs. But now after going through the process I understand. They want to place dogs in life long homes with loving owners.  They don't want dogs returned, surrendered to shelters or abused.  Our female, Bae, was returned twice before we adopted her and was so skittish that she wouldn't go through doorways and had separation anxiety.  After two years she has bloomed into a wonderful companion, very confident and without any of the separation anxiety she had before. As the foster family told us the interview is more for the dog to pick his new family then for the potential owners to be worthy.

My wife has this theory that dogs respond best to names with an R sound in them, as their hearing is tuned to sounds.

So I think Groot is a very good name.

Boxer names should begin with Bs. :D
