Popular Post shaneymack
Tapatalk is back! A few weeks back I started a new table. It is the same design as Marcs (from Youtube). This table will be just under 8' so I had to modify all the part sizes. Basically the same design though. I will try to give a quick run down on where I'm at with this thing. I started it in January. Feels like ages ago lol. Milled the stock for the legs Glued up the legs and squared them up on the shooting board Made the feet and the top supports Cut the mortises Made the tenons Cleaned up all the parts before glue up Glue up Next step was the stretcher . I cut the cheeks on the bandsaw These are huge tenons so I cut the shoulder el hando. Scribed the shoulder lines with marking knife then chiseled back to the line for saw registration. Sawed away Decent fit. I'll post the rest tomorrow. This took forever lol. Sent from my SM-G950W using Tapatalk

I use it to square up and size parts all the time. It's fantastic. Sent from my SM-G950W using Tapatalk

SawDustB
Glad to see your journals back, Shane! Looking at your pictures, I noticed that you have grooves in your loose tenons. Is that to help with the glue?

Popular Post shaneymack
This is what I accomplished last night I marked out all the through mortises for the wedges. Next up I had to remove most of the waste at the drill press but this piece is so big I needed to make a helper. I clamped a straight cut off to the drill press table to take a measurement at the table sawCA makes little jigs like this so easyPerfectForstner bit to remove the bulkChisel the restCut the curve and cleaned it up with the spoke shave Test fit. Time to make some wedgesCut them at the bandsaw and planed them to fit just rightJust rightMade the middle supportsThat's where I'm at. Gotta clean up the base and make the top. Almost there Sent from my SM-G950W using Tapatalk

Chet
I am assuming this table is going to be a daily user. Whats your plans for finish... kids and all.
shaneymack
I am assuming this table is going to be a daily user. Whats your plans for finish... kids and all.I'm going back and forth between Rubio Monocoat and Conversion varnish. I like the fact that the Rubio is super simple to apply and easy to touch up or re apply. Not as resilient as conversion varnish. If I go with conversion varnish I need to take it to my buddy's shop(spray booth) and do it. So touch ups or repairs or if ever I need to refinish will be much more difficult. Still not sure. Any thoughts? Sent from my SM-G950W using Tapatalk
..Kev
WB Poly? It's held up very well on much of my stuff, easy to fix, easy to apply, and no VOCs. Just a thought.
Popular Post wdwerker
I spray a pre-cat waterbourne that's quite tough. I'm pretty sure conversion varnish is even tougher. Considering the size of your brood when would you find time to touch up the table and let it dry? Go for the toughest finish possible !
Alan G
Would love to see someone use Rubio on this forum and give real world feedback. That stuff looks great but I worry about it’s longevity on an everyday table. Kids are tough on flat surfaces!
Unknown craftsman
Rubio mono coat is not a finish you build. I don't think it will prevent the wood from getting stained from spilled drinks. Its the opposite of conversion varnish. I have mono coat on my floors. We choose it so we could start moving our stuff back in after the floors were finished. And to add some color to our boring red oak. No smell or Vocs. It's not a very durable finish. Aj
