How to identify die casting vs CNC?

Recommended Posts

Hello! How do you know if a product was made using CNC machining or die casting? For example, a phone back cover. The Google Pixel 2 has an aluminum chassis. How can I tell if that was made using CNC or die casting? Any input would be appreciated!

I am guessing a lot of the die casting molds might be created on CNC equipment. This could make telling them apart quite tricky.

From the outside finished surface there is really no way to tell unless it is blatantly obvious. Like tooling marks and such. There may be something on the inside of the part, but usually things like that are machined, and finely finished so they can control every stage of the process having QC checks throughout for fit and finish.
