Popular Post Chet
The last thing left to do was the mortises for the hinges in the door and hinge strip. I did the lay out and then cleared out most of the waste with my trim router. I used a backer board to help support the router will doing this on both the hinge strip and door. It was fairly straight forward, with the size of the leaf on the hinges, the mortise when all the way across on both pieces. Then just cleaned up the edges with a chisel. I attached the hinges to the doors first using some steel screws to pre-tap for the brass screws on final assembly. After this I used some blue tape to hold the hinges in place on the hinge strip so I could "close" it and check the alignment before I drilled any holes. Then I added one screw in the top and bottom hinge and checked one final time. I have never used a hinge strip before so I was pretty nervous about the whole process. Then all three screws top and bottom. The screws will go all the way through the hinge strip and in to the front legs. Then I was able to finally glue the hinge strip to the leg itself . After this I attached the doors, several times actually, as I kept removing them to work on getting the gap even all the way around using my hand plane. This completes the build part, next I will take it all apart and do a final inspection for little nicks or anything else that happens during construction while giving it one last hand sanding, and then clean the shop of dust and on to finishing.

Popular Post Chet
Last few things... First off, in case any of you were wondering, this is why you need the systainers that your Festool gear comes with. They're not for storing the tools. The pulls had these pyramid screws for attaching them the the doors and drawers. They are 12 mm wide so I used an open end wrench to tighten them. I didn't want to chance marring the pulls so I did two things, I bought a new open end wrench so it didn't have any dings or burrs that could scratch the surface and then to double down and put a couple of layers of packing tape on both sides. This worked well The other thing you had to be careful of was to get the screws started real straight and level so that one corner didn't drag and scratch an arc into the finish of the pulls as they were tightened. Got the last door hung and noticed that the gap wasn't even all the way up and down. I have no idea what happened because I had worked on this be for the finish went on. But it doesn't matter, I just needed to get out the hand plane to fix it and move on, no big deal, and this is what plane shavings looks like with Arm R Seal on one side. Here is one picture of the finished sideboard. I will take some better ones once I have it in the house. The stiles ended up with some interesting chatoyance, kind of changes as you move around the room.

Mike, you mentioned in another thread that you take time off from woodworking during the spring and summer. What are your hobbies during this period if you don’t mind me asking? After long winters I just try to do a lot outside and I got a new toy a few months ago.

pkinneb
Wow!! Absolutely stunning. I can't believe how much this piece came alive with the finish. Your attn to detail throughout the build paid big dividends in the final piece. Now for the important question, how does the boss like it?

Oh were you talking about my lovely wife? She is real happy with it, of course it still sitting in the shop, but she had sort of picked it out a few years back when it was in Fine Woodworking Magazine. Looking forward to moving it in to the house today and seeing how it really looks.

You and I both know that means your only the boss when she lets you think you are LOL
Chet
46 six years this last July which only means you are more correct then if it was 30+ years. I think the only place I am boss is in the shop and even there I constantly get questioned... by me.
Tom King
Looks great! I'm having a hard time figuring out why it looks more pleasing to me than the first picture you posted of the one you were copying. Did you move the drawer pulls out ever so slightly? I've looked back and forth several times, but without walking dividers across my screen, I can't tell for sure.
