Chet
Contact Bench Crafted https://www.benchcrafted.com that have a hybrid product called crubber or something like that, its rubber and cork. I have it on my vise and I am supper happy with it. If you want to stick with leather you want something like a swede leather. Look to see if you have a shoe repair in your area and check with them or maybe even a fabric store.
Tom King
The leather is not hard to find, if you don't mind paying for it. https://www.ebay.com/itm/SLC-Natural-Veg-Tan-Cowhide-Tooling-Leather-Pre-Cut-Project-Piece/112173155608?hash=item1a1e0a8518%3Am%3Am4M-tp_hwbrOGER_SDyO8yw&var=412335028615&_sacat=0&_nkw=cowhide+leather&_from=R40&rt=nc&_trksid=p2060353.m570.l1313.TR12.TRC2.A0.H0.Xcowhide+leather.TRS0.TSS0 I've never seen any that thick used on vise faces though. This should work: https://www.ebay.com/p/Reed-Leather-Hides-Cow-Skins-Brown-Color-12-X-24-Inches-2-Square-Foot/726513126?iid=112050572285

Seems like the easiest option. I was surprised at how thin the BC leather was but it works great it the vice and dogs.
Chet
I should have said the Bench Crafted crabber is probably 1/16 maybe a touch thinner. I wouldn’t want it any thicker.

Like Chet says when the leather wears out I will switch to the crubber it works very well.

drzaius
I went to a local sure that sells nothing but hides & bought a whole small cow hide. The pieces I cut for the vices are about 3/32" thick & I used yellow glue to stick to the vice, rough side out.i really should have used hide glue, but I figure they won't need changing fur about 20 years. They provide a very secure yet gentle grip. The rest of the hide was used for champ faces.
