Contact Bench Crafted https://www.benchcrafted.com that have a hybrid product called crubber or something like that,  its rubber and cork.  I have it on my vise and I am supper happy with it.

If you want to stick with leather you want something like a swede leather.  Look to see if you have a shoe repair in your area and check with them or maybe even a fabric store.

Craft/fabrict Stores by me carry leather and leather substitutes and sell by the foot. Seems like the easiest option.

I was surprised at how thin the BC leather was but it works great it the vice and dogs.

I have crubber on my Moxin vise and leather on the leg vise, I purchased both from BC. Like Chet says when the leather wears out I will switch to the crubber it works very well.

I went to a local sure that sells nothing but hides & bought a whole small cow hide. The pieces I cut for the vices are about 3/32" thick & I used yellow glue to stick to the vice, rough side out.i really should have used hide glue, but I figure they won't need changing fur about 20 years.

They provide a very secure yet gentle grip.

The rest of the hide was used for champ faces.
