Hi all, I am trying to design a candle holder with various coloured woods. I was wondering whether there is a possibilty of dyeing woods with different colors, gluing them to form a blank and then turning them? Will the dye penetrate deep into the wood, so that when turned the dyed wood will be visible? Many thanks

Getting dye to penetrate deeply is a pretty difficult task. Kyle Toth sometimes dyes poplar veneer to a solid black, through and through, but says it takes days of soaking the veneer in a bucket of dye. I can't imagine solid wood doing well. Perhaps it might, if you used a fairly porous species, and a vacuum pot to infuse it, like when stabilizing pieces for turning.
