Newwoodhobby
Im working on restoring a back bar I inherited. I am going to possibly need to buy a few pieces to fix this and do not know what type of wood it is. I have stripped and started sanding it already. My goal is to be able to consistently stain it and I don't want to have to fight having different types of wood. This is my first post and I appreciate any help that could be provided. What type of wood is this? Also, is it normal for the old red stain to keep coming out in small spots?
curlyoak
I'd guess birch. If you live near a hardwood dealer, go there with something from the project...
Newwoodhobby
I believe you are right. Looking online no one has it. Will call around. Thanks
Popular Post phinds
The green stain on the lower part of this piece strongly suggests that it is tulip poplar / Liriodendron tulipifera
Chestnut
Tulip poplar makes a lot more sense than birch. I've heard tulip poplar called poor man's cherry multiple times. I found it entertaining mostly because the price for cherry wasn't that much different.

I live where TP abounds and Cherry was traditionally rare. I suspect that is a holdover from transportation costs of long ago.
