treesner
Hey guys I got my garage all insulated but need to take care of the garage door now. The door along with the rails need to be replaced so will be getting a new one. Is a pre insulated door better than buying a cheaper non insulated door + the insulation kits? Also any opinion on having the little windows vs no window on that top row of the door? Seems like they always get covered in cobwebs anyways
Tpt life
Natural light is nice when the power goes out if you have no other source. Pre-insulated panels will come skinned on the inside and a typically lighter. The foam is injected in a way that makes it structural. The skin is steel or aluminum of a thickness that things can be screwed into it if you like. Just thoughts regarding the difference. Not saying that’s worth it to every one. Also, most air incursion is around the edges. Be very picky about the exterior door seal.
drzaius
Way better to get an insulated door. They are designed & built from the ground up to seal as well as insulate. They are also more rigid & quieter when opening & closing. I would not be surprised if the insulated door is cheaper than an non-insulated door + insulation.
treeslayer
Go with a factory insulated door,I did and it made a big difference over my old junk door and I wish I would have went with windows, more light more better
pkinneb
Another vote for factory insulated. I have them on the shop and the heated attached garage not only do they look nicer with skins on both sides but I agree with the others above that with spray foam they are better insulated. Chestnut
Factory insulated vote as well, they are just better.
..Kev
I've installed 2 factory insulated doors and think they're well worth the extra money!
treesner
Think I’m going with clopay door, what insulation level should it be if the garage has r-13 in the walls and r-30 on the ceiling? We get a little bit of snow at 2700ft but not a ton. 100* in summer
drzaius
I would get the highest level available as long as the price wasn't insane. If sun will hit the door in summer then you really want good insulation. Are the walls open? If so, R13 is low & should be upgraded.

drzaius
Building code here requires R20 in walls, don't know what your's is. My garage (shop) was only framed in 2x4, so I strapped it out another 2" so I could get R20 in there.
Tpt life
A lot of old R-13 zones have gone to R-13 +5. They achieve the five with sheet foam or other. I don’t know your area of CA. I would reach out to any builder friends and ask. That would give you decent efficiency should you ever decide to heat or cool.
