Sean P.
Does anyone know a good way to determine the size a pedestal base needs to be prior to building? I'm working on an 80x42 oval table top with a pedestal base and am trying to figure out the dimensions the base needs to be to make sure the its stable. Thanks, Sean
wtnhighlander
Many variables factor in. Overall mass, center of gravity, etc. The last pedestal table I built was round, with the bottom of the base being about 16"-18" diameter, and the top 46" diameter. The base was a hollow cone, and seemed stable enough, but I still bolted 40# of weight into it for insurance. You want it to resist tipping if someone leans on the edge. BillyJack
You really need a double for that size
RichardA
@BillyJack is right 6'6" is fairly long, you would be better served with two pedestals. A single one would have to start from the center of the length, and go toward the ends quite a long way in order to be stable. And you do need a moderate amount of support all around to maintain stability.
Wimayo
I suggest that you get some measurements from some old tables. That may, at least, give you a starting point. Even if you can only find some pictures, you can approximate dimensions from proportions.
Sean P.
Thanks everyone. Yeah I am definitely planning to do a long pedestal (not sure if that still counts as a pedestal anymore). Just wasn't sure if there was a minimum distance from edge to consider.
wtnhighlander
"Minimum" distance would be knee room for seated users. A Google search for "dining table ergonomics" turns up a chart or two that recommends 18 inches from table edge to support structure, where seating position places the user's feet & legs inline with the support, as in a pedestal. You can make the table more stable by positioning any 'feet' on the base so that they extend between seating positions, and reach closer to the table edge. TableLegs.com has a good article on dining table dimensions here: https://www.tablelegs.com/resources-how-tos/dining-table-design-basics/ Edited November 17, 2020 by wtnhighlander Added info
