Popular Post Randall Child
Hello..I'm new here but saw online the post Bmac did on his chair build. when I saw the chair made by Bmac I thought I would share the chairs I made of one of Sam Maloof's last designs. I made the chair Bmac made as well. I am currently making a 2nd prototype of the same chair but with a few changes.. Hope you like them.. Here is also the classic rocker I made in tiger maple

Chestnut
Wow nice work. The first chair almost has a recliner look to it. It looks comfortable. I've been meaning to get those templates from BMac.
Popular Post Randall Child
Thank you all so much for the welcome.. Much appreciated.. This chair is a copy of a prototype that Sam made. I knew Sam well (since my 20's) There were several things Sam wanted to change on the chair, but passed before being able to make them. I saw all 3 of the newly designed chairs when they were being shown at his exhibit at his home. I have not seen the chairs displayed since. Sam was kind enough to make me copies of his templates when he saw that I could not afford one of his iconic rockers, so I could make my own. 2/3rds of my furniture is Maloof style pieces that I have made over the years..I still get very excited when making any kind of Maloof type pieces. There's just something about it that I find challenging. Pictures are of the 2nd prototype rocker but with several changes in the arm style and the position of the upper back legs. This chair is the first time I have used ebony for the accent plugs and strips in the rockers.. that stuff is just way too expensive..
gee-dub
Welcome Randall. I am also a local boy. The upholstered version looks comfy and that maple is just beautiful.

Bmac
Wow, so glad you joined the conversation @Randall Child!! As you probably noticed I'm a Maloof fan, but the fact that you knew him is really cool. Love your chairs and I'd be very interesting in seeing more of your work. Also, I am very interested in learning more about the joinery Maloof used in certain situations. I've studied his work and sometimes I can't figure out how he put things together. Through you relationship with him is this something you learned more about? When I tackled the lounge chair I had very little to go off of and I'm not sure how off base I was with my construction techniques. I have a few projects I want to tackle and it would be awesome if I could pick your brain as I'm developing them.
Randall Child
Thanks.. I'd be happy to answer whatever questions you may have. I knew Sam well and spent some good amount of time with him. I also knew all 3 of his helpers and still stay in touch with 2 of them now. I guess since I have been making these pieces for years and had access to Sam and the boys to ask questions, I learned a lot over the years and just became proficient at it I guess..
