Do I need to finish my solid mahogany mantle??

Recommended Posts

I have a solid piece of mahogany from my childhood home that I am going to be using as a floating mantle over the propane fireplace in my new home.

Originally the mantle was inserted in a large brick corner fireplace (typical 80s fashion! Haha).

I have sanded down the mantle and I want it to have the natural look in my home - basically look exactly like it currently does. My question is, do I have to finish it with any stain or oil or can I leave it natural. Like I said, I don’t want to change the colour of finish of it.

Welcome!

Do you have to no, would I yes. Certainly no need to stain it but I will apply something to it to protect the surface or you run the risk of a foreign substance staining it, think bugs, finger prints, spills, etc.

Any suggestions of what I could use? I will be having a butcher block counter top on my island, and I know to use Mineral Oil on that. Would that work on this too?

I'd use a clear wipe on poly or natural danish oil. Wipe on a couple coats with a good 8 hours of dry time in between. Use a good clean cotton rag and throw it away when your done.

Mantles aren't a heavy use item so you don't need much protection.

If you use and oil based finish make sure you let the rag air dry before throwing it away.
