Does Stain / Polyurethane Effectively Seal Wood?

Recommended Posts

Would the application of stain and polyurethane to a piece of green wood effectively seal that piece of wood? Specifically, would this prevent checking / cracking of the wood? If it does prevent checking / cracking of the wood, how long do you think the protection against cracking / checking would last?

I ask this question because the repeated application of polyurethane to a log--and particularly to the endgrain of that log--seemed to arrest the development of swiftly-developing cracks. So far, after several months, the cracks have not expanded. But, I do not know if the cracks will eventually start to expand again.

Thanks!

The mordant penetrates deeply into the wood, making it resistant to water and sunlight. It also protects the wood against mold fungi, woodworms, woodworm beetles and other pests and diseases. But water stains for wood have a significant drawback: getting into the middle of the wood, they lift its fibers, so the wood becomes unprotected from excess moisture.
