Gerardo Castro
Hello everyone, I'm trying to repair this sideboard that has an awfull finish (in my opinion), so i started stripping it off with a gel stripper. It looked good after the first coat went off, however, it started getting white after a bit. I tried to clean in first with a brush and after with some mineral spirits, it did look good for a while but afterwords it became white again. Also tried to sand after, but it still looks white. Did this happen to anyone? Does someone have any recommendation?
Tpt life
Two thoughts, either you don’t have all the varnish off, or that’s the way the wood looks when dry and dusty. Do a test on an inconspicuous area to see how to best clean that after scraping. Don’t run the risk of ruining the top.
wtnhighlander
+1 to testing a less visible area. My opinion is that the stripper hasn't removed all the finish, and what you see is from chemical reaction. Check the product instructions to see if there is a recommendation for how to neutralize the reaction.
Robby W
It could be the finish that remains is clouded. It you wipe with a solvent and it clears up, that is the cause. Similar to when you sand walnut and it looks kind of pale - then you put the first coat of finish on and it looks gorgeous. 1
