Hammer5573
I use my wood lathe in combination with my router to cut flutes in decorative columns. The router is mounted on a guide above the lathe. After each pass I need to rotate the column a precise amount before cutting another flute. The problem that I have is that I’m having difficulty locking the lathe shaft in place. Does anybody have any ideas about how to lock a lathe in order to keep it from rotating..? krtwood
Some lathes have an indexing plate built into them for this purpose. If yours doesn't have one then you could add a plate to the handwheel or between the work and the headstock. Essentially this is just a disc with evenly spaced holes in a circle and you lock it with a pin. Where and how you attach the holder for the pin would be the tricky part and would depend on your lathe and stand. If you search around for lathe indexing I'm sure you'll find some commercial solutions.
BillyJack
If the lathe work your doing isn't too long, you might get your hands on a Router Crafter and play switch to put flutes j
wtnhighlander
If you resort to making a DIY indexing plate, one with notches around the rim, and a 'detent' lever to engage them, might be easier to attach to your lathe than one with holes and a pin.
