JohnG
On the picture frames I have made, I cut the miters before cutting the rabbet on the router table. This lets you dry fit the frames to ensure the miter cuts went as planned before taking the time to cut the rabbets. But certainly cut the rabbets before gluing the frame together.
Chestnut
Rabbeting after miters before gluing isn't a bad idea. I like doing it before miters as i have better luck getting consistent rabbets when working with longer larger stock. Really depends on how you cute the rabbet. Coop
And these are longer pieces, as in 19” to 45”. And I plan to put a small chamfer on the inside edges.

Popular Post Coop
I don’t know what the heck I was thinking about when I agreed to make these frames. 26 of the required 52 pieces. 6

Like keepsake boxes; they seem simple enough until you have to make a dozen of them. Fight the good fight. Ever onward and all that . . . stuff. I'm doing a batch of smaller frames right now. I'll post later but let me just say . . . I feel your pain 1
Coop
Do you guys leave the blue tape/hinges on when cutting for the splines to help mitigate for the glue?
treeslayer
I do Coop, well most of the time, I does help with glue squeeze out clean up and helps somewhat with tear out, looking great, that’s a lot of frames
Coop
In the video that @legenddcprovided above, the procedure for cutting the splines themselves is spot on. Exact thickness every time.

I laughed at this when you posted it without doing the math and thinking 52 pieces would make a lot more than 13 frames. I need to make 2 frames in the near future but there are a lot of other frames I'd like to replace as well. Suddenly those 52 pieces seem far too real! How's it going with these? Did you make the picture frame jig and/or spline jig for the frames?

Did you make the picture frame jig and/or spline jig for the frames? When i read 52 pieces sounded like a lot. Once i realized it was only 13 frames it didn't sound like as much. Once you get into production mode it's pretty easy to knock out large numbers. I made a stack of 30 frames in 2021, the part that took the longest was glue-up because i only had 1 band clamp. Popular Post Coop
The 33”x45” and the eight 28”x38” are drying after two coats of ARS. The four 28”x38” need a little sanding and edges smoothed over. The two larger ones were too large to use the blue tape as hinges so I used dominos for the glue up. All received splines. I do hame a small miter sled and it worked well with an extension added for repeated cuts. 36 bf of 5/4” lumber and I needed every foot of it.
Chestnut
Oh dang those are big frames. For some reason i thought you were making smaller ones in the 11x14 size range. They are looking really nice I like the finishing method. Frames always seem difficult to finish without issues somewhere.
legenddc
Looking good! Didn't realize they were that big either.

Chestnut
Oh nice i love the look of the frames. I take it you got to skip the tedious part of putting in the glass, backer and all the hanging hardware? That's my least favorite part.
