Hammer5573
I am currently building a period piece ( blockfront cabinet) made of Sapele. I'm hoping to produce a high gloss finish that will maximize the grain. I can't decide whether to spray Lacquer or Shellac. I would appreciate your opinions on these or any other finishes for this type of piece? If I decide to use shellac, should I go with a 1.5 or 2# cut (using a spray gun)..? If I use Lacquer, would applying a thin coat of dewaxed shellac under the lacquer be of any benefit?
wtnhighlander
My only opinion is that shellac will give the sapelle a slightly amber, warmer tone, that clear lacquer will not. Otherwise, I think either is a beautiful finish.
Just Bob
Do both. This is a sapele kitchen island I made in 2016. I spayed 5 coats of shellac, lightly sanding between each coat. and then 5 coats of lacquer, sanding between each coat. One caution, this piece gets really heavy use, and I am going to have to refinish this year. So you might want to use a different finish depending on the type of use your piece is going to get. When I do refinish I will be using Osmo Polyx. I used a garnet shellac and made my own 2# cut.
