Thank you everybody!

The neighbor wanted the glass built in as you would do a wooden panel. I told them it was crazy. So on the inside there is about a 5/16" molding holding the glass in. So when a panel breaks there will be an opportunity to remove the molding and replace the glass. Not replace the door.

I gave them 2 choices for wood. Sapale or cypress. Mahogany will work also. Hard to tell Sapele from mahogany. The sapele is denser. My preference but not my house.

Very nice. Great job.
So you built this for a neighbor? What did you finish it with?
I am currently building a garden bench from cypress and the wood is on the soft side. Any concerns about this?

The neighbors preferred matte finish. The older I get the less I like maintenance.   It seems to me the more gloss the longer it lasts. Working with the neighbors we put on 8 coats a side. The biggest drawback to cypress is the soft factor. I tried to lobby for sapele. Greater density. They did not like the color. Your garden gate will get dented. Call it patina...

I’ve heard of this product and understand from very little research that it is a quality outdoor finish. Did you find somewhere that 8 coats were recommended?

Not needed. My neighbor is always over the top. Better than not enough. 3 or 4 should be enough. The brand is premium.
