curlyoak Posted October 6, 2024 Report Posted October 6, 2024 The west coast will get the worst. I live on the East coast. Still a lot of work and a lot of nasty. The worst is no power. Hope for the best...It will be here Wednesday or Thursday... 6 Quote
Tpt life Posted October 6, 2024 Report Posted October 6, 2024 I have been looking at jobs down there. The last couple of weeks have made me doubt…. Quote
Mark J Posted October 6, 2024 Report Posted October 6, 2024 I hope you make it through OK, and all the west coasters, too. 2 Quote
Von Posted October 6, 2024 Report Posted October 6, 2024 Best thoughts for it being mild and everyone staying safe. 1 Quote
curlyoak Posted October 6, 2024 Author Report Posted October 6, 2024 The way it looks now the eye will travel east and be north of me. That means if the prediction path is correct that the river and beaches water level will be lower than normal here. THE hurricane will be blowing off shore south of the eye and onshore north. 2 Quote
Popular Post Tom King Posted October 7, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted October 7, 2024 I'm wishing you the best of luck which I expect will be needed. I don't know that there is any such thing as mild these days coming across the Gulf with as warm as the water is. I wouldn't want to be in the market for home insurance down there. 3 Quote

Based on current info it appears the storm will weaken going over land before it gets here. For the moment I have decided not to install shutters. I still expect plenty of rain and I hope I dont loose power. 2 Quote
Mark J Posted October 7, 2024 Report Posted October 7, 2024 Wow, this thing has become a Category 5 hurricane. 1 2 Quote
Botch Posted October 8, 2024 Report Posted October 8, 2024 Top windspeed of 180 mph was recorded over the Gulf, but they're expecting it to reduce to Cat 1 to 3 (depending on your news source) by the time it hits Tampa. Stay safe, man. 2 Quote
Popular Post curlyoak Posted October 8, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 8, 2024 We got lucky. It looks like the path is far enough north that it will be tropical storm strength here. And no storm surge here. Some aggravation and disruption. I am glad I dont live in the Tampa area! 5 Quote
legenddc Posted October 8, 2024 Report Posted October 8, 2024 Glad to hear you're safe. I hope everyone stays safe and it weakens before it hits. I can't imagine living that close to hurricanes and possibly needing to evacuate. The costs to leave (gas, hotel, etc.) plus the disruption of everyday life and all the unknowns has to be extremely stressful. Quote

DC has a history of hurricanes. Most of the Atlantic US coast and Canada has been touched by hurricanes. With warmer sea temps there will be bigger and more storms. The storms are bad. Another bad is the crazy increases to home owner insurance. A jumbo problem for Florida... Quote

Another bad is the crazy increases to home owner insurance. A jumbo problem for Florida... We do get hurricanes but they typically loose some steam before they get here or are further out to sea. Been in this area since 1988 and never been under evacuation orders. I'm also far enough inland that storm surges don't reach here. Hurricane Sandy did some damage to our house from a leak that wasn't properly repaired by the previous owner. It was a nice greeting into home ownership for us. I'm sure storms will only get worse. Popular Post curlyoak Posted October 10, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 10, 2024 Made it to the other side. No meaningful damage. Had a bumper crop of jumbo avocados that has been reduced to a small crop. Modest landscape damage. I read the tea leaves and based on my life experience with hurricanes my decision to not install shutters and not to move 200 orchids paid off. Hurricanes produce tornados. Milton might have the record for how many. The number is yet to be determined. I'll post it when I know. A sliver of Milton is still in Florida way north of me. The most wind came from 2 feeder bands. I'd guess 50 to 60 on the max wind. Clean up next... 7 Quote
Popular Post curlyoak Posted October 10, 2024 Author Popular Post Report Posted October 10, 2024 Come get some! This avocado, Marcus Pumpkin, is very big. One of the bigger ones and is almost as big as your head! And all attributes are excellent! 5 Quote

Popular Post Mark J Posted October 10, 2024 Popular Post Report Posted October 10, 2024 Just a thought. If you can't give them to friends, a local food bank might take them. 4 Quote
