Humberto
Hello hope everyone is doing good. Has anyone here gone to FSW, florida school of woodworking? If so would you mind sharing your experience? I’m debating whether to go to school to learn faster about woodworking, joinery etc Also would love to hear opinions on wether or not going to WW school is a good idea?
Popular Post wtnhighlander
As a hobbyist with an unrelated full-time job, I can't justify the cost of such a school. However, if your goal is to earn a living from woodwork, or if your disposable income allows for the expense, a formal education should hurry you along the path. Sorry, I have no knowledge of that particular school, but we have a member or two in Florida, maybe they have.
Mark J
I've heard of the Florida school, but I've never taken a class. A few of us on the forum have taken classes at the Marc Adams School, and those classes have been great. But each week long class is narrowly focused, so one would have to take a lot of classes before you'd cover all the joints in "joinery". Maybe FSW has a different curriculum? And like was said in you othrr thread, it's probably mire important to learn how a prospective employer wants the joints done.
Popular Post Von
When I was just getting started, I took a cheap class at our local parks department. It was basic even for myself at the time, but good for me just to get exposed to new things and new ways of doing things. Woodworking is huge space with lots different niches and ways of doing things. I suggest you seek out ways to expose yourself to as many aspects as possible to figure out what interests you (and, Mark J is right, your employer will no doubt shape this). I always hesitate to suggest YouTube since it's a circus, but if you keep a healthly dose of skepticism and remember most people there pretend they invented cutting wood and are trying to sensationalize things to draw eyeballs, it can be a good way to expose yourself to a lot of stuff quickly. If you want someone trustworthy, I'd recommend The Wood Whisperer (who I believe hosts this forum btw).
Ron Swanson Jr.
Here is a resource that i recently stumbled onto It's full of good stuff: https://www.furnitology.com/ Plans, calculators, lumber, classes and build-alongs, etc. Check it out. Also, i second what Von said. I'll flack Rob Cosman for YouTube content. He has an enormous amount of free content, with granular detailed instruction. I always learn something from his videos. Oh yeah, one last thing. If you want to work wood, start learning how to sharpen, like right now.
Popular Post pkinneb
I am a class junkie and believe that they are worth it. I have learned something in every class I have ever taken and for me that makes it worth it. I have not been to the Florida School of woodwork but it is on my short list and gets very high reviews from students and instructors. I have experience with MASW, Wooden Boat School, Greg Pennington Windsor chairs, as well as many local classes at Woodcraft, Community College, etc. Another great option are online offerings like the The Woodwhisiper guild, Peter Galbert, etc for a fraction of the cost of in person classes you get great instruction. Finally YouTube can be a great resource you just have to be sure they actually know what they are doing there

After studying at the university, I came out completely lost. I didn't know what to do next, since I had no practical experience. All employers asked "Did you have any work experience?" What work experience, if in college I asked do my homework for me, I used https://ca.edubirdie.com/do-my-homework-for-me for this. So if I were you, I would definitely go on to study, the main thing is that there would be practice there. Then it will 100% help you in the future with work. Are you still thinking? Of course it's worth going. Extra experience will never hurt you!
