I did add the vertical element for strength. The shelves are 4' wide and will be loaded solid with legal size folder files. According to the sagulator, it is right at the limit so I added the piece. Also, yes...I primed before painting. I had them tint the primer to help keep from showing any places I might have "missed a spot" with the paint.
