What kind of past filler/grain filler do you use?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering what kind of grain filler or paste filler you guys use for solvent based finishes. In the past I've always made my own when using a waterbased or oil based finish. I'm using a lot of poplar at the moment that's destined for a S-W CAB lacquer finish. Any suggestions on what I could use for leveling out the pores?

Drywall mud .. not the premixed, but the "setting" type that comes as a powder to which you add water. I've used this for a LONG time, and it works great. If you doo use the premixed, it MAY take 2 coats as it is prone to shrinking ... the powdered stuff won't.
