I am in need of a specialty hinge.

I am designing a high chair for my son, and have been told by a more experienced father that the tray really should be one-hand operable. I've been wracking my brain, and think that a design kind of like that on airplane tray tables (the ones in the arm) might work. So, I need a hinge that will allow the tray to lift across the kid's lap and then pivot down to the side of the chair. Does that make any sense?

If I'm completely bonkers, does anyone have any better ways to make the tray one-hand releasable?

dont want to be the party pooper but it seems like you are making a job too dificult(I know thats the fun of it) go for the swing out and down type but also plan for just a hing or swing out tray. this way if you have to settle you are already preped for making it a simpler method.

also look at old antique style high chairs people have been making babies for a long time and carpentry is almost as old so i bet someone has come up with a ideal solution.

Rockler sells High Chair Hardware. Here is the link on Rockler's website and on Amazon.

I posted the Amazon link because the first review says "If you unlatch one side, you can flip the tray around so that it hangs on the side of the chair from the other latch."

I have no experience with this hardware though.

To the OP, I know it's 7 years later, but did you ever figure out a solution? I'm looking to create something that this type of idea would be a part of.

Was able to find this for reference, if this captures what you were thinking... Considering buying some of the tablet surface pivot-hinge hardware and mounting it to a custom wood side-bar I would make.

@Vertrie, would you care to share details about your project? Perhaps a new thread? As drzaius said, the OP hasn't been here in years. But there a good number of engineering minds around that can certainly contribute ideas.
