What about a new forum called "Wood"

Hey Marc. Thank you again for creating or putting this community together. I think that one thing we all have in common is "wood".

How about creating a section for wood where we discuss our experience with different types of wood?

You are in command of this ship so, any decision you take is fine with me.

I am a database driven guy and the only reason I suggest this new title is to make it easier to find answers.

Why wood? I come from the cabinet business where we use a lot of plywood where movement is not an issue. Starting to work on solid wood changes everything, taking in account for wood movement has really make me study joinery in a whole new way, more pressure ... OK I keep this short, you got the picture.

I too would like to see a wood site. I have been using many different types of exoctic woods and would appreciate some help on them. Just the other day I was cutting up some Purpleheart from a nice 8" wide board, cut some 16" lengths and the next day 2 of the boards were so warped I could't use them! From the same length of board! So a "Wood" section for these type problems would be nice.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks,

NYHump

Isn't 16 different forums enough, though? I would think if you had a question about wood it would be posted here in the general woodworking forum. Wood is about as general a topic to woodworking as there is. Take the power and hand tools, joinery, finishing, turning, shops, designing and planning out of the general discussion and you don't have much more than wood to talk about here in the general forum. Just my $0.02.

Well I reserve the right to change my mind, :), but for now I think we might stick with Wood being part of the general category. Its hard to know exactly where to draw the line, but the forum is already getting to the point where the home page is a giant list. So I think we might just put this one on the back burner for now.

Satellite/cable have 150+ channels each and we only have 16?!? Man-up. I still say we should subdivide the power-tool forum into regions based on where they were manufactured. The new Shops subforum needs subdivision into Basement, Detached, Garage, Commercial, and Vic's-Freaking-Warehouse. There might be a need for an Apartment Shop subforum, but we seem to have lost Kenneth since the move to forum 3.0 (a loss).

I did not know we get to vote, all I have to say is that was posted at the beginning. Our friend Marc commands this ship. :D

This is from my current project. Prior to finding this at my local mill on my last trip, I always thought of Birch as strictly a secondary wood. But, I found these examples that I'm using for a cradle. The base will be walnut. I'm still working on that design.

Every wood has its moments. 'cept MDF.

Very nice Birch pieces. Third one is kinda appropriate for a cradle; will remind the kid of its more recent "home" B)

ok.... you're right, Vic's-freaking-wharehouse does deserve his own forum, if just for us to express our shop envy.

I'll give in. I would like the Neanderthal forum to be further subdivided into plane manufacturer forums - Stanley, Sargent, Keen Kutter, Record, Union, and - of course - "all things Millers Falls" forum. You can lump those silly LN planes in an "ugly bronze planes" forum somewhere.

As for the birch, there's wood porn and then there's wood porn.

Sorry Bobby, don't take it personal. we're just having a little fun. :)

Vic. I never used birch but some say is a perfectly fine wood for a bench top. Probably when I build mine, I will use it.

At the same time, since my first bench will never be perfect I am considering doing my first bench with big timber. I know a log cabin builder in Colorado and probably I could get some free wood.

I'm in love with these pieces of Birch. My sawyer has a good eye for grain in logs and I've found some really nice boards at his place. As far as a hand tool bench, I plan on using wood I purchased over 15 years ago that was originally a 100 year old barn in Eastern Oregon. It's extremely dense red fir. I think timbers would work well, too, as long as they are dry. The only thing I think you'll want to be careful of is orientation, to make sure you've designed for movement.

My very first piece of "real" furniture was made from a heavily figured piece of birch. I found out what "figured" was when I applied the stain and it appeared striped from top to bottom. I was a little taken aback and thought it looked cool so I left it. After some research, I realized it was just a figured wood. But it was birch and it sure was beautiful! Nice stock there Vic.

As for Kenneth, he's going through some personal stuff and I believe he's just very busy right now on top of it. I'm sure he'll be back when the time is right.

Vic ... you had to bring the movement word

Since I don't like to do the same job twice, probably I will end up buying lumber and in Colorado I will take the chance with the leftover wood from my log cabin.

I'd definitely consider the timbers for the structure, and it would probably be fine for the top as long as you resaw it and use as much straight grain as possible.

Hola! I stuck my foot in the door and reserved "Kenneth" but haven't been able to get back into the swing of things (still) for several reasons. I did look for "Shopless" at one point and assumed that Marc was still working on that part. *tapping foot* :D

Great to be back in touch with you guys.
