Hideous or Beautiful? Either way, it's sure unique!

Recommended Posts

So I wanted to make an easy-to-construct end grain board. I decided to use a 7" wide peice of maple in it's full width to make less cuts.

When I exposed the end grain, this is what I found. I haven't decided yet if I love it or hate it, but it's definitely one or the other!

Thoughts? Is it just maple starting to spalt?

I love it. It's the unexpected beauty and randomness of the wood that really adds to the appeal of woodworking for me. This is a great example of just that. The pattern is reminiscent of fractal art to me.

To answer one of the questions, this is beyond "starting" to spalt.

Personally, I think it's beautiful and don't care if it's a cutting board or if you end up saving it to use in a box or something else. Showed the pics to a coworker and he had the same opinion.
