jaredsfuture
Hey, got a quick question. This looks like a great price to me; but being N00b, I wanted a second opinion on this ad for Figured Curly Maple At 50 cents per board ft, is it a steal of a deal? Or better off elsewhere? PaulMarcel
Uhm, that is a steal. The boards look pretty short and likely have some check on the ends, but you could still make nice nightstand tops, drawer fronts, clocks, small boxes, list goes on. I hope you weren't really waiting for a reply Unless there's something suspicious when you get there or something wrong with the wood you can't see in pictures, grab it all. Bobby Slack
I am very cautious. When something is too good to be true it usually is.
Lawrence Brown
Hehe. If you don't grab it, let me know and I may run over and pick it up! Seriously...
jaredsfuture
lol, well I had already called and left a message for the guy. I just wanted your guy's take, in the mean time. I still haven't heard back from him. I caught it about an hour after his posting...so maybe someone already got it?
Lawrence Brown
Could be, though he is out in the middle of nowhere (Seattle-wise, that is). Of course, it's just barely past business hours, so he might not be home yet. Good luck. I hope you get it. That seems to me one of those deals where if it is true, it's too good to pass up. I've gotten some amazing stuff off craigslist, so you never know until you check it out.
jaredsfuture
Heh, most of the amazing deals I've found are across the sound, though very few that makes me want to go and get it like this. I have to catch the ferry over to grab it. I guess it's because there's a small customer base over there. As apposed to Seattle and Bellevue, for tools, they'll try to get at least 3/4+ the retail price. Even if half of them are decent, it's still a good price I think. So, besides rot and suspicious insect holes, what else should a discerning woodworker look for in a situation like this? Thanks!
PaulMarcel
If there are some with rot, etc, look at the good ones and see if in the end you have a good deal at $150. Some check is to be expected, especially with curly/quilted stuff (I have a quilted board deciding it wants to be two boards right now in the shop )
jaredsfuture
Still no reply. I discovered something interesting about the guy selling this. Apparently he's a retailer of wood, just do a Seattle search for the last 4 of his phone number (8580) and you'll find several postings of wood for sale. Some nice logs and slaps out there.
