adambaum
Finished my chair yesterday. I am not sure, but I think I used almost every power tool that I have and most of my hand tools. Heck, I even had to buy a tool (mortiser). I did learn an important lesson: I used hard maple and found that hard maple is called "hard" for a reason. I think my next chair will be pine. AMarshall
Adam, that maple has me thinking about my wood choice. I went with Cypress because it's the traditional outdoor wood here in the South, but I like that maple. Now I'm wondering what other untraditional woods might do well outdoors. Nice adaptations of the design, also!
adambaum
I went with maple because of price. I tend to make a lot of mistakes and remake parts so I was looking for something that wouldn't cost me major $$$ when I threw it in the trash bin. A local supplier had 8/4 stock for under $5/bd ft. I am not 100% sure, but the outer back slats may be cherry. I had a bunch of 8/4 cherry next to the pile of maple so I may have accidentally used a board.. Going from flawed memory, the cherry pile looks the same, but the outer back slats sure look darker compared to the rest of the chair. As for adapting the design, wasn't on purpose. I didn't get to the slots in the front apron due to laziness. Back slats are rounded on both sides because I wasn't paying attention and rounded the left side of each back slat. I only noticed it when I was dry fitting. Didn't feel like milling more wood so I just rounded the right sides. If I was making multiple chairs, I could have just swapped parts or I could have made a "left" chair and a "right" chair. Adam
