  1. The marks weren't there last summer when I finished them and the panels are floating with no glue. If it is water, how do I rebuild to avoid this in the future. I've built tons of doors but none around water I guess.
  2. I built all new upper cabinets in the kitchen, refinished lowers and built new doors and drawers for all the cabinets. The door frames are solid maple with a 1/4" maple plywood panel. They were finished with an oil based general finishes stain and then 4 coats of minwax poly. A couple of the doors are showing some weird mark on the bottom of the plywood panel. All are lower doors which makes me think water damage but one is on the island which isn't even close to the sink. Any ideas?
  3. I'll try the darker stain technique and see if it helps. Can't get any worse.
  4. A 17 year old and a 20 year old. I've stained a board and left it in the shop instead of letting it dry in case of contamination. I imagine I'll redo the doors, just frustrating to get that far and then have it go to crap.
  5. I'm building new cabinet doors for the kitchen, also drawer fronts and the upper cabinets. I'm doing them in maple and using a general finishes oil stain, candle light. I've attached several pictures of spots that are showing up in the finish. I'm doing two coats of stain with 24 hours of dry time between coats. The spots were not there after the first coat but were after I attempted to wipe off the excess on the second coat. They disturbingly look like finger sized smudges. I'm wearing blue nitrile gloves as I wipe on and off the stain and it is possible I'm laying a finger on the board there but I'm not understanding why it isn't happening everywhere I touch and if it is possible to sand/restain. The middle panel is 1/4" mdf with maple veneer. I'm sanding the entire door to 120 grit. I also attached a pic of a door that doesn't seem to be having any problem.
  6. The granite countertops sitting on top of the base cabs mean I'll have to refinish those but I am rebuilding the upper ones.
  7. It is a poly. I was thinking the stripper would save me gumming up the sanders
  8. No not that kind of stripper! I have some poplar cabinets with a cherry stain I'm looking to refinish. I'll strip the faceframes and build new drawer fronts and doors but I haven't refinished anything in 10 years so I thought I'd see what strippers everyone suggests.
  9. My favorites are their cheap F style clamps, the acid brushes, the nitrile gloves, my 3/8" hammer drill (I've used it 4 times in 5 years), my multi tool (like a fein vibrating tool), the free LED flashlights, belt sander (used it twice in 3 years), their compressor accessories, and the 18 gauge brad gun. I also bought some cheap table legs for a folding table there and built my own cut table out of 2x2 so now I can cut plywood right on the table and if I ever cut through too much of the 2x2, I'll just make another.
