bfiedler
Hey guys, I've been asked to refinish some cedar siding that hasn't been touched in 15 years. It's all been under an awning, so it's been kept dry, but the sun as bleached some parts, while other sections still look brand new. I don't know what finish was on there before (most likely oil stain). How do I stain these again, but keep it from looking patchy? Sand it all down? Maybe stripper? I can post photos later, as I can't on my iPhone.
wtnhighlander
I just had a pro estimate re-staining the cedar on my house. They recommended pressure washing first. I had a washer, so I tried it out. It does remove the old finish, and any mildew stains, but eats away at the soft grain, and takes forever. I also tried scubbing with oxyclean (powdered laundry cleaner), which works surprisingly well, and is much faster. Either way, the wood will need to dry for several days before finishing.
bfiedler
This cedar is 25 years old and hasn't been finished in 15 years at least. So I'm too scared to pressure wash and have it just disintegrate on me. We will probably just sand it and hope for the best.
wtnhighlander
If it is smooth, sanding is probably best. Mine is all rough side out.
